IDD Direct Support Professional

Responsibilities

  • Assist residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting to ensure comfort and dignity.
  • Support medication administration following prescribed protocols, including monitoring vital signs when necessary.
  • Provide compassionate care tailored to individual needs, including Alzheimer's and dementia care, memory support, and behavioral management strategies.
  • Operate assistive devices such as Hoyer lifts and ensure safe transfer techniques to prevent injury.
  • Prepare nutritious meals in accordance with dietary plans while maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards in the care environment.
  • Document resident progress accurately using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems and communicate updates to team members effectively.
  • Maintain a clean, safe living space by performing light housekeeping tasks such as cleaning common areas and personal spaces.
  • Drive residents when needed for appointments or community outings, ensuring safety and adherence to transportation policies.

Skills

  • Proven experience in assisted living, long-term care, or home & community care environments with a focus on individuals with disabilities or senior populations.
  • Knowledge of vital signs monitoring, medication administration, dementia care, Alzheimer’s care, and behavior management techniques.
  • Strong understanding of working with individuals with developmental disabilities and familiarity with group home or personal care home settings.
  • Ability to operate EMR systems efficiently for documentation purposes.
  • Excellent caregiving skills combined with patience, empathy, and strong communication abilities.
  • Physical capability to assist with transfers using Hoyer lifts or similar equipment; comfort with providing personal care tasks.
  • Valid driver’s license for safe transportation duties; experience driving residents preferred.
