BASIC FUNCTION
This is a top-level technical role with mentoring responsibilities in addition to all the responsibilities that apply to the I&E Tech III level.
This position will provide Instrument and Electrical leadership and support for the continuous manufacture of quality high density polyethylene (HDPE) and specialty fluids (HDA), consistent with high standards of quality, safety, housekeeping, and good employee relations. Provide support for all Baystar’s manufacturing facilities
RESPONSIBILITIES
General
- Perform a variety of complex duties under limited supervision
- Ability to mentor across all skill levels to develop technical knowledge within less experienced staff
- Must be able to locate and diagnose failures and perform complex repair and troubleshooting of instrumentation and electrical equipment
- Lead and support activities involving company and contract personnel to improve the instrument and electrical availability of the facility
- Understand, support, and comply with all plant safety policies and procedures, including Lock-Out / Tag-Out (LOTO) and all electrical safety procedures, and industry codes/standards
- Position located in a chemical processing facility and requires overtime to meet plant needs, including alternative shifts as needed to meet facility needs
- Position requires on-call duties, and the successful candidate must be able to respond 24/7, 100% of the time to plant emergencies on short notice, including nights, weekends, and holidays while on-call
- Complete all assigned training by deadline
- Contribute to continuous improvement by offering suggestions for long-term solutions to minimize costs, improve reliability, and improve loss control performance
- Assist other maintenance craft as required
Technical
- Initial point of contact for advanced I&E troubleshooting within the facility
- Expertise must be demonstrated in the following areas:
- 138kV substation activity
- High and medium voltage infrastructure and maintenance
- Preventive maintenance optimization
- Capital project coordination for I&E activity
- Mentor and train technicians
- Calibration and Repair of all types of instrumentation
- Understand process flow of all production units to assist in troubleshooting
- Document all work performed and ensure all redlines are up to date
- Able to read and interpret procedures, design specifications, National Electric Code, and electrical schematics
- Clear communication of complex technical issues so that less experienced or less knowledgeable individuals may understand the challenges being addressed

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) required
- Journeyman Electrician license
- Minimum of 15 years’ experience in electrical and instrumentation field work
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of safe electrical practices, safe hot work practices, and confined space regulations
- Computer literacy (Microsoft) required
- NFPA 70E Arc Flash Training
- Experience with Allen-Bradley PLC, Variable Speed Drives, and Honeywell and/or Emerson DCS systems
- Experience with high-voltage switchgear and substations
- Candidate will be required to successfully complete a bench test
- Candidates will be required to successfully complete extensive testing, drug/alcohol screen, physical requirement evaluation and an extended training period
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE
- Advanced training in the field
- Associates degree with an emphasis in Electrical/Mechanical skills, Industrial Electricity Instrumentation or equivalent
- Experience in a polymer manufacturing facility
- Expert knowledge and understanding of National Electrical code guidelines
PHYSICAL CAPACITY REQUIREMENTS
This position requires the incumbent to:
- Follow site safety requirements for the role and wear mandatory FRC and PPE (foot, head, ear, eye, hand, and fall protection) when inside plant environment or where directed by signage or procedure
- Wear SCBA and/or facemask respirator where directed by signage or where safety precautions are necessary
- Read and understand technical documents and procedures in English
- Vision ability of near, far, and intermediate distances, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception
- Required to work at ground level, from ladders, and from heights greater than 250’ above grade on fixed platforms, mobile equipment platforms, and scaffolding
- Ascend and descend stairs and stationary vertical ladders with and without a safety cage
- Access confined spaces and pressure vessels through standard 24" manways
- Must be capable of lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds
- Frequent bending, reaching, stooping, crawling, walking, and climbing
- Sit or stand for extended periods of time
- Work at computer for significant periods of time throughout the day
- Required to reach overhead and at shoulder level with hands and arms
- Must demonstrate fine and gross motor coordination including pinching, gripping, turning, and keyboarding of both hands
- Move about uneven surfaces, including catwalks, deck grating, and wet and muddy areas
- Work outside in all weather conditions walking up to ½ mile per job
