Immigration Staff Attorney

Class: Full time/Exempt

Reports To: Director of Resettlement and Immigration

Salary: $80,000-$90,000

Location: In person

POSITION SUMMARY:

Jewish Family Services of Greenwich seeks a motivated and compassionate Staff Attorney to join its Immigration Legal Services Department. Under the direct supervision of the Director of Immigration Legal Services, the Staff Attorney will provide immigration legal services to clients and support the continued development of a compliant, high-quality nonprofit immigration legal services program.

This position is ideal for an early-career attorney seeking supervised experience in nonprofit immigration law within a mission-driven organization. The role is in-person and will require the attorney to work at our Greenwich, CT office.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide direct legal representation and assistance in immigration matters, including:

§ Family-based immigration petitions

§ Naturalization and citizenship

§ Adjustment of status and consular processing

§ Humanitarian relief, including asylum, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), VAWA self-petitions, U visas, and T visas

• Conduct client intakes, legal screenings, and consultations

• Prepare and file immigration applications, legal memoranda, affidavits, and supporting documentation

• Represent or assist clients before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS); any EOIR court practice will be consistent with attorney licensure and organizational authorization

• Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential client files in accordance with EOIR standards and organizational policies

• Communicate clearly with clients regarding eligibility, risks, timelines, and case progress

• Collaborate with attorneys, interpreters, and social service staff to provide holistic, trauma-informed services

• Participate in community outreach, legal clinics, and Know Your Rights presentations

• Assist with case tracking, data collection, and grant reporting requirements

• Participate in ongoing supervision, training, and professional development in immigration law and legal ethics

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school

• Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. state, or eligibility for admission within a reasonable time frame

• 0–2 years of immigration law or related legal experience (including clinics, internships, or fellowships)

• Commitment to ethical immigration legal practice and compliance with EOIR standards

• Strong legal research, writing, and organizational skills

• Ability to work effectively with clients from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds

• Willingness to work under supervision and participate in regular case review

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Fluency or professional proficiency in Haitian Creole and/or Spanish (Haitian Creole strongly preferred)

• Experience working with Latino, Haitian, and low-income communities

• Experience in a nonprofit, legal services, or public interest setting

• Familiarity with DOJ Recognition & Accreditation (R&A) Program requirements

• Experience with immigration case management systems
