In-Home Academic Tutor (8th Grade) - Sarasota, FL

Job Title: In-Home Academic Tutor (8th Grade) – Sarasota, FL
Location: Sarasota, FL (in-home)
Schedule: 2–3 sessions per week (flexible scheduling; immediate start through end of semester)
Compensation: $40–80/hr as a 1099 contractor

About the Role

We are seeking a well-rounded, experienced tutor to support an 8th-grade student in Sarasota as she works to successfully complete her online coursework this semester and prepare for the transition into 9th grade.

This role is both short-term (finishing the semester strong) and forward-looking (building readiness for high school). The ideal candidate can step in quickly, bring structure and accountability, and help the student stay on track across multiple subjects while also revisiting and strengthening key concepts from 8th grade that may need reinforcement.

What You’ll Do

  • Identify, re-teach, and reinforce foundational 8th-grade concepts that are impacting current performance
  • Provide in-home, one-on-one academic support across core subjects (as needed)
  • Help the student stay on track with online coursework, assignments, and deadlines
  • Break down assignments into manageable steps and ensure completion
  • Build organization, time management, and study skills
  • Fill in academic gaps through targeted instruction and practice, ensuring the student is prepared for high school-level work
  • Balance current coursework demands with strategic review of prior material
  • Support a smooth transition into high school by strengthening academic habits, confidence, and core skills
  • Communicate regularly with parents on progress, priorities, and pacing

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong generalist background across middle school subjects (required)
  • Experience supporting students with online or independent coursework preferred
  • Ability to diagnose learning gaps and provide clear, effective re-teaching
  • Skilled at balancing support with independence-building
  • Organized, proactive, and able to manage multiple assignments and priorities
  • Warm, encouraging, and able to build rapport with a middle school student
  • Reliable, communicative, and professional

Ideal Candidate

You are the kind of educator who can step into a situation, quickly assess both immediate academic demands and underlying skill gaps, and create a clear, manageable plan. You are comfortable revisiting prior material, reteaching concepts in a new way, and ensuring true understanding—while also keeping the student moving forward with current coursework. You help students not just complete their work, but build the skills and confidence needed for high school and beyond.
