In-Home Special Education Teacher / Private Educator (Brooklyn, NYC – ASAP Start)

Seeking a highly experienced special education teacher / private educator for a 4th-grade student in Brooklyn (Ditmas Park/Flatbush area) for in-home instruction.

Schedule:

• ASAP through end of June: Ideally M-F (mornings preferred), a few hours per day (flexible for the right fit)
• Summer: Part-time/flexible (TBD), will discuss how many hours he should do over the summer to allow for free/summer time but also ensure success in September
• Assignment runs until end of August 2026 (upcoming private school placement will them begin)

Student Profile: Student presents with cerebral palsy (impacting fine motor output) and ADHD, with a strong cognitive profile. He is academically capable but has fallen behind due to school absence since December and benefits from auditory learning (strong auditory comprehension, weaker independent reading comprehension). Previously attended PS 72 The Children’s School. He is very friendly, personable, and a good rapport with him will go a long way.

Goal: To re-engage him academically, rebuild confidence, and establish consistency in a supportive 1:1 setting.

Key Responsibilities:

• Deliver individualized academic instruction (ELA & Math) aligned to grade-level standards
• Help close gaps and get him back on track academically
• Support consistent use of assistive technology (speech-to-text, alternative math platforms)
• Modify output demands (reduced handwriting, alternative response formats)
• Provide structured support for attention, task initiation, and multi-step work
• Incorporate audiobooks and auditory-based instruction
• Build strong rapport and support re-entry into learning following school refusal
• Use calm, supportive strategies for frustration/anxiety and work avoidance

Ideal Candidate:

• Certified Special Education Teacher (preferred) or highly experienced private educator
• Extensive experience with ADHD, executive functioning, and motor-based learning differences
• Strong experience with school refusal and/or work refusal, including effective strategies to re-engage students
• Skilled in assistive technology and differentiated instruction
• Strong relationship-builder; personable, patient, and able to establish trust quickly
• Comfortable working in a highly personalized, in-home setting

Compensation: Competitive NYC rates; based on experience (to be discussed with qualified candidates).
