As we continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced In-House Attorney to strengthen our legal, compliance, and recovery operations, tax compliance, ensuring the company is fully protected in all contract and payment matters.

Job Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented In-House Attorney specializing in Contracts, Employment, and Recovery Strategy to join our team. The In-House Attorney will serve as the company’s primary legal advisor, responsible for contract management, employment law compliance, dispute resolution, and cross-state regulatory support. A primary focus of this role is leading all recovery and contract-enforcement activities, ensuring the company is fully protected in payment disputes, contract breaches, and pre-litigation matters.

Responsibilities:

Recovery & Enforcement

  • Lead all recovery activities, including pursuing unpaid balances, drafting demand letters, negotiating settlements, and enforcing contract terms.
  • Develop and execute recovery strategies that improve cashflow and reduce legal exposure.
  • Evaluate claims and disputes, recommending the appropriate escalation path (internal resolution, settlement, or referral to outside counsel).
  • Investigate disputed projects, review documentation, and coordinate with Operations, Finance, and Customer Service to resolve issues quickly and professionally.
  • Strengthen internal processes and contract language to prevent future disputes and streamline recovery efforts.

Contracts & Business Operations

  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts including customer agreements, subcontractor contracts, vendor/supplier agreements, and more.
  • Improve contract templates and legal SOPs to ensure consistency, enforceability, and risk reduction.
  • Provide guidance to operational teams on contract interpretation and compliance.

Employment Law & HR Support

  • Advise leadership and the HR Manager on employment matters including hiring, discipline, termination, wage/hour issues, and investigations.
  • Collaborate with the HR Manager to review, update, and maintain employee handbooks, offer letters, policies, and compliance documentation aligned with CA, NV, TX, and AZ laws.
  • Ensure multi-state compliance with labor regulations and state-specific requirements.

Regulatory Compliance, Tax Oversight & Risk Management

  • Stay current on legal, regulatory, and tax developments affecting operations in CA, NV, TX, and AZ.
  • Ensure compliance with business licensing, contractor licensing, insurance requirements, and corporate filings.
  • Support tax compliance and tax-related legal matters, including advising leadership on multi-state tax exposure, sales/use tax issues, contractor-related tax obligations, and legal considerations affecting tax strategy.
  • Provide internal training on contracts, documentation, compliance, and risk prevention.

Skills

  • Proven experience in legal research and analysis using LexisNexis and Westlaw platforms.
  • Strong negotiation skills with the ability to draft clear and effective legal documents.
  • Knowledge of diverse legal areas including estate planning, environmental law, tribal law & regulations, securities law, workers' compensation law, personal injury law, family law, immigration law, patent law, and landlord-tenant law.
  • Excellent writing skills for preparing memos, contracts, pleadings and other legal documentation.
  • Familiarity with litigation processes and managing cases from inception through resolution.
  • Ability to interpret complex laws and regulations accurately through comprehensive research.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate across departments and with external partners.

Qualifications Required

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (California strongly preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in contract law, employment law, litigation, or collections/recovery work.
  • Strong negotiation, drafting, and communication skills.
  • Must be able to work on-site in San Diego and support multi-state operations.

Preferred

  • Experience in collections, recovery strategy, construction or contractor operations, or service-based industries.
  • Prior in-house experience, especially with a growing company.
  • Experience managing or coordinating outside counsel.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (California strongly preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in contract law, employment law, litigation, or collections/recovery work.
  • Strong negotiation, drafting, and communication skills.
  • Must be able to work on-site in San Diego and support multi-state operations.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $170,000.00 - $180,000.00 per year
