JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: In-House Junior Associate Counsel

Labor management organization and benefits administrator seek highly motivated and proactive Junior Attorney for an In-House Associate Counsel position based in Queens, New York.

Must have 1-3 years of litigation insurance experience, a J.D. from an accredited law school, be currently licensed to practice law in the State of New York, and in good standing. Ideal candidate will have excellent writing and communication skills with the ability to effectively work with different departments on various legal issues across multiple disciplines and practice areas, be able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team and handle multiple assignments.

Experience in the following area required: Insurance, Knowledge of labor and employment law and law school journal experience helpful.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Support General Counsel and Counsel in various legal matters;
  • Advise on issues relating to insurance policies, coverage, claims, underwriting, and risk management;
  • Manage JIB Insurance Program;
  • Evaluate contractor bond requirements and assess bond compliance;
  • Maintain and update bond and insurance policy records in internal systems;
  • Assist with claim investigations and coordinate with external legal teams when needed;
  • Liaise with regulators, brokers, adjusters, and external counsel as needed;
  • Work with Human Resources Department on insurance and employment matters;
  • Handle in-house or remote employment investigations;
  • Legal research and preparation of memoranda as requested;
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Please note, this is not a remote position. Light travel may occasionally be required. Starting base salary is $100,000 with the Employer reimbursing the employee’s FICA tax, for a cumulative annual salary of $108,283.68. The Employer contributes 10% of the employee’s base salary to their 401(k) each year with no vesting period. The Employer also offers two (2) pensions subject to respective Plan rules and vesting periods.


Work Environment

This job operates in a collegial and professional legal office environment.

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as desktop computers, email, phone, headset, scanner, printer, keyboard, photocopiers, shredder, and fax.


Physical Demands

Generally sedentary work environment with physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This would require the ability to lift files, pull files/forms/books, stand, bending, shred documents, open/close filing cabinets as necessary.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a non-billing, full-time, and on-site position. Days and hours of work are generally Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Travel

Light travel may occasionally be expected in this position (court conferences, seminars, etc.). Candidate must have a vehicle.


Required Experience, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Must have 1-3 years of litigation experience in insurance law;
  • J.D. from an accredited law school;
  • Currently licensed to practice law in the State of New York and be in good standing;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills with the ability to effectively work with different departments on various legal issues across multiple disciplines and practice areas, be able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team, and handle multiple assignments;
  • Ability to negotiate and draft a wide variety of agreements;
  • Excellent negotiating, analytical, drafting and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to interact with and advise senior level staff;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Solid, substantive knowledge of litigation, legal research, and legal writing required;
  • Law school journal and/or labor and employment law experience helpful.
