In-person Houston Test Prep Tutor

IDEAL CANDIDATE: Passion for tutoring, knowledgeable and experienced with ACT/SAT/test prep, available in 3-4+ hour time blocks at least 3 days a week Monday through Thursday, and one weekend day (Sat or Sun)-- available 4 days a week total. Available to take a diagnostic SAT asap and score 730+ in subject area, can start asap. Most urgently hiring verbal (english/reading) tutors.

PLEASE NOTE: in-person tutors can work in our main office or at student homes, depending on the location.

STEPS FOR TAKING YOUR DIGITAL PRACTICE TEST:

1) Download the from College Board onto your computer or tablet. Make an account as a student so you can take Practice Test #7 in the Bluebook App. Please choose a username and password you are comfortable sharing with the Firat team.

2) Take only the subject test you will tutor for (two modules for verbal OR two modules for math). It will take 64-70 minutes with regular time. (Only select Extended Time accommodations if you have documentation of a learning difference.)

3) Once the practice test is over, download the PDF score report AND email your username and password for the Bluebook account. Email me directly at hannah@firateducation.com

We are looking for tutors with at least one year of tutoring or teaching experience and are available to tutor in person at least 3 days a week (mostly afternoons after school hours). Candidates must be comfortable teaching middle school and high school math and working with kids of all ages (2nd-12th grade). The ideal candidate is also comfortable tutoring in all school subjects for 2nd-5th graders (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies).

While ISEE and ACT/SAT experience is preferred, it is not required. You will take one of the standardized tests and be trained on our methodologies. (Please note that taking the test and the 2-4+ hours of training required are NOT paid.)

Duties:

  • Research and recommend textbooks, software, or other learning materials to complement tutoring.
  • Participate in training and development sessions to improve tutoring practices or learn new tutoring techniques.
  • Organize tutoring environment to promote productivity and learning.
  • Develop a full working knowledge of academic skills, development materials, and strategies.
  • Review class material with students by discussing text, working solutions to problems, or review worksheets and other assignments.
  • Provide feedback to students using appropriate techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students.
  • Monitor student performance, and maintain records of students’ assessment results, progress, feedback, or school performance.
  • Keep in strict confidence all student data and progress.
  • Identify, develop, or implement intervention strategies, tutoring plans or customized plans for students.
  • Work with our Student Success Director to schedule your students.
  • Demonstrate courteous and respectful behavior.
  • Available for both in person and online tutoring sessions

Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (OR graduating with a bachelor's degree by 2026)
  • Strong GPA in college.
  • Obtained a high SAT / ACT score in high school
  • Have a passion for teaching
  • Professional and positive attitude, with excellent communication skills (both oral and written), and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Ability to use different methods to explain specific topics and work with different learning styles
  • Develop methods and strategies for breaking learning plateaus
  • Outgoing personality, friendly, patient, and dedicated
  • Responsible, organized, and very timely
  • Excellent computer skills including ability to research online, Microsoft Office, and ability to conduct tutoring sessions via web-conferencing.
  • Open Availability (3:00 pm through the evening on Monday - Thursday, at least 3-4 hours available on weekends). Occasional Fridays.
  • Ability to work with young students
  • Previous experience.

  • Please tell us your availability to tutor in person. Are you available to tutor in person (at our Spring Branch office near the IKEA) at least TWO to THREE weekday afternoons/evenings per week and at least ONE weekend day? Hours are typically 3-8 pm Mon-Thurs and may range from 10am-6pm on some weekends. If you are available outside this window, please include it.
  • What year did you graduate college? If you did not graduate yet, what year are you projected to get your bachelor's degree?
