JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE

The In-person STEM/STEAM Teacher delivers engaging, standards-based instruction in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts (when applicable), and Mathematics for students in grades PreK–8. This role fosters critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and environmental stewardship through differentiated, hands-on learning experiences. The STEM/STEAM Teacher collaborates with grade-level teams, specialists, and school leadership to promote student success and uphold the mission of Crosslake Community School.

  • Partnering with external organizations such as Sourcewell, Resource Training and Solutions, Osprey Wilds, and other educational agencies to enhance programming

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction & Curriculum:

  • Deliver high-quality, standards-aligned STEM/STEAM instruction for students in grades PreK–8, including students receiving special education services, to promote critical thinking and content mastery
  • Provide instruction and specialist coverage in Science, Technology, Engineering, Environmental Education, Mathematics, and (where applicable) the Arts
  • Discover, create, and teach units of instruction aligned to Minnesota academic standards in STEM/STEAM content areas
  • Design and deliver age-appropriate lessons incorporating auditory, kinesthetic, and visual learning modalities
  • Teach and enable students to engage in higher-level thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, creativity, and educational risk-taking
  • Integrate technology creatively and effectively into instruction, maintaining a growth mindset toward emerging tools and practices, including AI-informed teaching
  • Adhere to Minnesota state standards as designed by MDE

Assessment & Data:

  • Assess and monitor student learning outcomes using formative and summative measures to inform instructional decisions and ensure alignment with Minnesota state standards
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date student records and grades in the school platform, ensuring timely feedback and transparency with students and families

Collaboration & School Culture:

  • Collaborate with grade-level teams and school staff to align instructional plans, share strategies, and support school-wide initiatives such as Environmental Education, MnMTSS, Catalyst, Responsive Classroom, and Q-Comp
  • Contribute to school culture and community building by actively supervising or serving on at least one club or committee
  • Collaborate with external partners including Sourcewell, Resource Training and Solutions, Osprey Wilds, and other educational organizations
  • Support and guide paraprofessionals, if assigned, to ensure instructional consistency and student success

Communication & Family Engagement:

  • Communicate effectively with families and staff to ensure student success, address concerns, and build strong school-home partnerships
  • Lead parent-student conferences up to twice per year (or more as needed), clearly communicating academic and social-emotional progress, learning goals, and strategies for support
  • Participate in school events and student/parent conferences to strengthen community engagement

Professional Growth & Operations:

  • Participate in team meetings, professional development, PLC, MnMTSS, department, and full staff meetings as required
  • Maintain valid Minnesota teaching licensure and complete all required professional development, including renewal clock hours and mandatory trainings per PELSB requirements
  • Model and promote the mission of the school, including its focus on environmental education, equity, and a positive school climate
  • Support school operations and systems by performing additional duties as requested

PELSB LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS – TIERS 1 – 4

Crosslake Community School welcomes applicants holding any tier of Minnesota teaching licensure issued by the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB). The following outlines tier-specific expectations and district support commitments:

Tier 1

Up to 1 school year; renewable up to 3 times (4 total)

Bachelor’s degree (or BA exemption); job offer from MN public/charter school; must attempt MTLE aligned to assignment; position posted minimum 15 days on PELSB-approved site

CCS provides structured mentoring, onboarding, and assists with PELSB application. Tier 1 teachers are expected to enroll in a PELSB-approved teacher preparation program within the first year.

Tier 2

Up to 2 school years; renewable

Bachelor’s degree; enrolled in a PELSB-approved teacher preparation program; job offer from MN public/charter school

CCS supports active progress in teacher preparation. Assigned mentor and PD aligned to preparation program goals. Expected to complete program and transition to Tier 3.

Tier 3

3 years; renewable indefinitely (75 clock hours per renewal)

Bachelor’s degree; completed PELSB-approved teacher preparation program; passed required MTLE exams (or exempt per August 2023 rules)

CCS supports ongoing growth through Q-Comp, professional development, and leadership opportunities. Teachers maintain renewal requirements including clock hours.

Tier 4

5 years; renewable indefinitely (125 clock hours per renewal)

Tier 3 license plus 3 years of MN teaching experience; evaluation without improvement plan requirement

CCS values experienced educators and provides leadership pathways, mentoring roles, and advanced PD. Tier 4 teachers may mentor Tier 1–2 colleagues.

CCS will consider candidates holding or pursuing licensure in the following PELSB-recognized fields:

  • Elementary Education (K–6) — PELSB Rule 8710.3200
  • Science: General Science (5–8) — PELSB Rule 8710.4750 (Full License)
  • Science: General Science Middle Level (5–8) — PELSB Rule 8710.3340 (Endorsement)
  • Mathematics (5–12) — PELSB Rule 8710.4600
  • Mathematics: Middle Level (5–8) — PELSB Rule 8710.3320 (Endorsement)
  • Technology (5–12) — PELSB Rule 8710.4850
  • Early Childhood (Birth–Grade 3) — PELSB Rule 8710.3000 (for PreK–3 scope)

Note: If a candidate holds a Tier 3 or Tier 4 license in a field not listed above, the district must apply for an Out-of-Field Permission through PELSB. CCS will work collaboratively with candidates to identify the most appropriate licensure pathway.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field (or qualifying toward BA exemption per PELSB guidelines)
  • Valid Minnesota Teaching License at any tier (Tiers 1–4) in an applicable licensure field, or eligibility to obtain one prior to start date

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience teaching, advising, or working with youth in an educational or advocacy setting (preferred; Tier 1 applicants may demonstrate equivalent relevant experience)

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong understanding of Minnesota academic standards in STEM content areas
  • Effective instructional planning for hands-on, inquiry-based, and differentiated learning
  • Ability to prioritize, stay organized, and manage multiple tasks independently and collaboratively
  • Knowledge of MnMTSS, Responsive Classroom, or similar multi-tiered support frameworks (preferred)

Technology Proficiency:

  • Demonstrated fluency with educational technology tools including Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and learning management systems
  • Ability to integrate technology creatively into instruction, with a growth mindset toward emerging tools including AI

Personal Attributes:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills across multiple modalities

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Tier 3 or Tier 4 Minnesota teaching license in a STEM-related field
  • Experience teaching in a multi-grade, multi-age, or multi-faceted learning environment
  • Familiarity with special education supports and inclusive instructional practices
  • Experience with environmental education, place-based learning, or outdoor education
  • Willingness to participate in or lead extracurricular activities, clubs, or school events
  • Experience with educational technology integration, digital instructional design, or AI-informed teaching
  • Training in Responsive Classroom, PBIS, or similar social-emotional learning frameworks

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Typical 8-hour workday within an in-person school building setting
  • Standard school hours: 7:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. or 7:45 a.m.–3:45 p.m.
  • 175 workdays annually (prorated based on start date), including school and PD days
  • Frequent sitting and hand use; occasional standing, walking, reaching, crouching
  • Must be able to talk and hear effectively to support instruction and communication
  • Occasionally required to lift and carry materials up to 25 lbs

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Agreement: 10 month, 175 days
  • Schedule: 8 hours per day; general business hours are 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. with flexibility as needed
  • Position Type: Crosslake School Building
  • Technology Requirements: Must maintain Google Calendar; CCS uses Google Workspace district-wide
  • Meeting Requirements: Must attend all required weekly meetings including department, MTSS, PLC and full staff meetings
  • Salary Range: At 1.0 FTE: BA, Step 0 (Tier 1) at $29,650/year to DOC, Step 0 (Tier 4) at $56,075/year. Placement varies by education. Steps determined by CCS tenure; new hires start at Step 0. See CCS Employment page.
