Job Summary

We are seeking dedicated in-person tutors to provide academic support to students at LACOE Youth Probation Centers. Tutors will work with secondary school students (grades 8–12) in small-group and one-on-one settings.

Tutors will support students with the coursework and study needs they bring to each session, helping improve comprehension, build academic skills, and develop positive learning habits and decision-making.

Work locations include sites in Downey and Sylmar, California. Candidates will be considered for placement based on their zip code, availability, and current program needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide structured small-group and one-on-one academic support.
  • Assist students with homework, study preparation, and comprehension across subjects.
  • Model effective problem-solving and learning strategies to promote independence.
  • Adapt support to each student’s academic level and needs in a drop-in tutoring environment.
  • Collaborate with fellow tutors during overlapping shifts to maintain coverage and session continuity.
  • Maintain accurate daily attendance and progress records.
  • Communicate regularly with Program Coordinators and Thrive staff via phone, email, and text.
  • Complete required compliance and facility training prior to assignment (LiveScan, TB, Mandated Reporter, PREA).

Position Requirements

Communication: Ability to collaborate via phone, email, and text.

Education: Minimum of 60 completed college credits (or currently enrolled).

Experience: Prior tutoring experience or experience working with at-risk youth preferred.

Skills: Comfortable working with youth in a classroom or structured setting.

  • Punctual, reliable, and dedicated to student success
  • Experience supporting secondary-level academics
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student PII

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 18 – 20 per week
