The Indian Classical Dance Teacher is responsible for teaching foundational and advanced techniques in classical dance, preserving authenticity while engaging students of various age groups and skill levels. The teacher will design lesson plans, conduct classes, prepare students for performances/exams, and contribute to the cultural mission of the institution.
Key Responsibilities Teaching & Training
- Conduct regular dance classes for beginner to advanced levels.
- Teach adavus, nritta, nritya, abhinaya, tala, and repertoire items.
- Provide individual guidance to improve posture, rhythm, expression, and technique.
- Train students for stage performances, competitions, and certification exams.
- Demonstrate choreography and help students learn complex sequences.
Curriculum & Planning
- Develop structured lesson plans and annual curriculum.
- Select songs, compositions, and themes appropriate for training and performances.
- Maintain discipline and ensure a positive learning atmosphere.
Performance & Event Support
- Choreograph classical pieces for school/academy events.
- Organize rehearsals, costume planning, and backstage coordination.
- Prepare students for arangetrams (for Bharatanatyam/Kuchipudi), rangmanchs, or equivalent milestones.
Administration & Collaboration
- Maintain student attendance, progress records, and evaluation reports.
- Communicate with parents about student progress.
- Collaborate with musicians, costume designers, and other staff.
- Promote the dance program and assist in student recruitment if required.
Skills & Qualifications
- Formal training in at least one Indian classical dance form from a recognized guru or institution.
- Minimum 2–5 years of teaching or performance experience (adjustable).
- Strong knowledge of natyashastra, tala system, classical music basics, and choreography.
- Ability to teach students of different age groups with patience and clarity.
- Good communication skills in English and/or regional languages.
- Passion for teaching and preserving Indian classical arts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma/degree in classical dance (from Kalakshetra, Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, etc.).
- Experience conducting workshops, stage productions, or exams.
- Ability to teach theory along with practical dance.
