The Indian Vocal Music Teacher is responsible for teaching students the fundamentals and advanced techniques of Indian classical and semi-classical vocal music. The teacher will conduct practical and theory classes, develop a structured curriculum, prepare students for performances/exams, and foster a supportive and culturally rich learning environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesTeaching & Training
- Teach vocal techniques including sruti, laya, raga alankars, voice culture, and improvisation.
- Train students in alap, taan, bandish (Hindustani) or varisais, geethams, kritis (Carnatic), depending on specialization.
- Provide instruction in music theory, notation, and understanding of ragas and talas.
- Prepare students for stage performances, school events, competitions, and certification exams (Gandharva, Prayag, university-level, etc.).
- Offer individual attention to improve pitch accuracy, breath control, and vocal expression.
Curriculum & Lesson Planning
- Develop structured lesson plans for different student levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced).
- Select appropriate compositions for learning, practice, and performance.
- Maintain discipline and ensure a positive, engaging learning atmosphere.
Performance & Event Preparation
- Organize and guide students for concerts, cultural programs, and annual events.
- Conduct rehearsals and offer performance coaching (stage presence, microphone handling, confidence-building).
- Assist with accompaniment planning (tabla, mridangam, harmonium, violin, etc.).
Administrative & Communication Duties
- Maintain attendance, student progress reports, and examination records.
- Communicate with parents regarding student growth and practice requirements.
- Coordinate with other music and dance teachers for combined cultural events.
- Assist in promoting the music program and student enrollment if needed.
Skills & QualificationsRequired
- Formal training in Hindustani or Carnatic vocal music under a recognized guru or institution.
- Strong knowledge of ragas, talas, compositions, and improvisation techniques.
- Ability to teach students of different age groups.
- Good communication and classroom management skills.
- Patience, musical sensitivity, and passion for teaching Indian classical music.
Preferred
- Diploma/degree in music from a recognized institution.
- Experience preparing students for music exams or performances.
- Ability to teach semi-classical forms (bhajans, light music, devotional songs) if required.
- Experience with tanpura apps, shruti boxes, or digital music tools
