The Industrial Custodian plays a key role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of downtown Cedar Rapids parking ramps and skywalks. This position ensures a welcoming environment for customers, employees, and visitors by performing routine cleaning, minor maintenance, and providing courteous assistance when needed. This is a driving position that requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to meet DOT driving standards.
Responsibilities
Cleaning & Sanitizing:
- Sweep, mop, and scrub floors in lobbies and skywalks to remove dirt and debris.
- Clean and sanitize high-touch surfaces such as handrails, elevators, doors, and windows.
- Empty trash receptacles and dispose of waste properly.
Maintenance:
- Report maintenance issues or safety hazards promptly.
- Perform minor tasks such as replacing light bulbs or damaged signage.
- Operate snow removal equipment such as trucks with plows or Bobcats with small plows during winter months (training provided if needed).
- Operate yard maintenance equipment such as lawnmowers during summer months.
Customer Service:
- Provide friendly assistance to customers using parking facilities.
- Offer directions or information when requested.
Safety & Security:
- Follow safety protocols and report suspicious activity or unauthorized persons.
Inventory & Supplies:
- Monitor and restock cleaning supplies.
- Maintain inventory and report shortages or damages.
Team Collaboration:
- Coordinate with team members for efficient cleaning schedules.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers.
Job-Specific Requirements
- Physical stamina to stand, bend, lift, and move heavy objects.
- Strong attention to detail for thorough cleaning and maintenance.
- Good verbal communication skills.
- Dependable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
- Ability to work in varied weather conditions.
- Prior housekeeping or janitorial experience preferred.
- Ability to operate snow removal equipment (truck with plow or Bobcat) is a plus.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and meet DOT driving requirements.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Maintain professional appearance and personal hygiene.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to pass a background check and drug test.
Schedule & Pay
- Full-time; approximately 38.5 hours per week.
- Pay: $16.00 per hour.
- Night and weekend hours or rotating shifts may be required.
