The Infection Control Nurse is responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating infection prevention and control (IPC) practices in the hospital, in line with NABH standards, national guidelines, and hospital policies. 1. Infection Surveillance
- Conduct active surveillance of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) such as:
- CAUTI
- CLABSI
- VAP
- SSI
- Collect, compile, analyze, and report infection data
- Maintain infection rate statistics and trend analysis
- Share surveillance reports with ICC and department heads
2. Implementation of Infection Control Policies
- Ensure implementation of NABH-approved infection control policies
- Monitor compliance with standard precautions and transmission-based precautions
- Ensure proper hand hygiene practices across the hospital
- Support safe injection and aseptic practices
3. Monitoring & Audits
- Conduct regular infection control rounds
- Perform audits on:
- Hand hygiene compliance
- Biomedical waste segregation
- Environmental cleaning
- Sterilization and disinfection processes
- Document findings and initiate corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)
4. Training & Education
- Organize regular training programs for:
- Doctors
- Nurses
- Technicians
- Housekeeping staff
- Educate staff on:
- Infection prevention practices
- Use of PPE
- Spill management
- Needle stick injury management
- Maintain training records as per NABH requirements
5. Biomedical Waste Management
- Ensure segregation, collection, transport, and disposal of BMW as per rules
- Monitor color-coding compliance
- Coordinate with housekeeping and waste handlers
- Report and investigate BMW-related incidents
6. Outbreak Management
- Identify and report suspected infection outbreaks
- Assist in outbreak investigation
- Implement containment and control measures
- Coordinate with microbiology, clinicians, and hospital administration
7. Sterilization & Disinfection Oversight
- Monitor CSSD processes
- Ensure proper cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of equipment
- Validate and document sterilization indicators
- Audit high-risk areas (OTs, ICUs, dialysis units)
8. Coordination with Microbiology Department
- Review culture and sensitivity reports
- Correlate lab findings with clinical infections
- Assist in developing antibiotic stewardship inputs (as applicable)
9. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain:
- Infection control registers
- Surveillance data
- Audit reports
- Incident reports
- Prepare monthly and quarterly reports for ICC and NABH audits
- Ensure documentation meets NABH objective element requirements
10. Staff & Patient Safety
- Monitor needle stick injuries and exposure incidents
- Ensure post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) protocols are followed
- Promote safe work practices to reduce occupational hazards
11. Participation in Infection Control Committee (ICC)
- Act as member secretary or key coordinator
- Attend ICC meetings
- Follow up on action points
- Support continuous quality improvement initiatives
Required Candidate Profile :
- Should have completed Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery / Bachelor of Science - Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc Nursing.
- Current Nursing License, in good standing with the State Licensing Board [Karnataka Nursing Council].
Desired Experience and Skills:
- Minimum of 5 to 10 years of relevant experience in Infection Control Practices
- Compassionate personality, soft spoken and always willing to help others.
- Good listener and with a bilingual ability (Kannada, English, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Coorgi / Kodavatak, Malayalam).
- Knowledge of NABH standards and infection control guidelines.
- Strong observational and analytical skills.
- Good communication and training abilities.
Key Competencies:
- Understanding of biomedical waste management rules
- Understanding of HAIs (CAUTI, CLABSI, VAP, SSI)
- Familiarity with NABH standards, national guidelines, and hospital policies
- Knowledge of sterilization, disinfection, and aseptic techniques.
- Basic knowledge of microbiology and antibiograms.
