Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The University of North Carolina Wilmington Library seeks an Information Literacy Librarian to promote information literacy knowledge and skills by developing information literacy instructional materials; engaging with faculty, staff, and students in New Student Seminar, English Composition, and the Honors College; and providing training on information literacy concepts to library and UNCW faculty and staff. This is an 11-month (July-May) renewable non-tenure track special faculty position reporting to the Associate Director of Academic & Research Engagement.
The Information Literacy Librarian is part of the UNCW Library’s Academic & Research Engagement (ARE) division, which collaborates with faculty, staff, and students in UNCW academic units to provide information literacy instruction, assist with research, develop the library collection, provide consultative services supporting research and scholarly communication, and partner on programming, in alignment with the information and research needs of campus stakeholders. Library faculty in this division proactively engage with campus constituents to promote the use of library services, facilities, materials, and expertise.

Upon initial appointment, this position will:
- Act as liaison to the Center for Academic Advising, English Composition, and the Honors College
- Develop and assist in delivering and assessing information literacy instruction for the core curriculum (New Student Seminar and English Composition)
- Collaborate with the Director of University Studies, the University Studies Advisory Committee, and liaison librarians to align recommended information literacy concepts with practices at UNCW
- Provide training on information literacy concepts to library and UNCW faculty and staff
Library faculty in the ARE division generally have the following responsibilities:
- Collaborate with faculty and instructors to create, provide, and assess information literacy instruction for courses where information literacy skills are in development
- Provide research and scholarly consultative services to faculty, instructors, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students in areas of focus
- Ensure that the library’s collections adequately support curricular and research needs of students, faculty, and staff in areas of focus
- Engage with students, faculty, and staff, including collaborative programming such as workshops, panel discussions, fellows’ programs, and exhibits
As a library faculty member, this position will:
- Provide on-call research help during scheduled in-person Library Help Desk or Virtual Reference shifts
- Support the mission and strategic plan of UNCW Library and engage and participate in library-wide meetings, committees, and decision-making
- Participate in professional development activities such as research, presentations, publications, and conference attendance. UNCW Library is committed to supporting professional development through time, funding, and mentorship
- Participate in service to the library, university, and/or profession
- Keep current with developments in librarianship, particularly in areas related to Academic & Research Engagement
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
- ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information sciences
- Applicants with earned degrees will be given preference. Candidates with nearly completed degrees will be considered; however, master’s degree must be conferred by August 1, 2026, to be eligible for employment.

- Demonstrated knowledge of core and emerging practices, standards, and trends in information literacy in an academic environment
- Ability to learn, and/or experience with, the creation of asynchronous online learning objects using appropriate instructional technologies
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment with a diverse population of faculty, staff, students, and colleagues
- Effective interpersonal, oral, written, and virtual communication skills using a variety of media and technologies

The library faculty in the Academic and Research Engagement (ARE) division of the UNCW Library collaborate with faculty, instructors, staff, and students in UNCW academic units to ensure that all stakeholders are engaged with the library at a level that supports their academic, research, and scholarly success. ARE librarians support the information and research needs of faculty, staff, and students through one-on-one consultations, assist in managing the library collection in areas of focus, and partner with stakeholders on programming. Librarians in this division also plan, deliver, and assess information literacy instruction in consultation with faculty and instructors and play a key role in educating faculty and instructors on the information literacy needs of their students. Library faculty in this division proactively engage with constituents to promote the use of library services, facilities, and materials. ARE librarians contribute to the library’s scholarly research servicesby providing guidance and support to UNCW faculty and graduate students who are conducting and disseminating research, scholarship, and creative works, with an emphasis on those using emerging technologies and techniques.
