Infrastructure & Security Technician

BASIC FUNCTION: Work collaboratively to provide technical support and maintain secure, reliable infrastructure for NIACC faculty, staff, and students. This position supports campus Information Technology systems across network, server, and endpoint environments while helping develop, implement, and manage the college’s information security practices. The Infrastructure & Security Technician will use change and project management tools to track, monitor, and resolve infrastructure and security issues, partners with departments to safeguard information assets, and delivers responsive, high-quality customer service.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Starting salary of $51,700 to $63,300 based on experience. Benefits package includes Blue Cross/Blue Shield major medical health insurance; eye care, dental, life and disability insurance; paid vacation and sick leave; a choice of IPERS or TIAA retirement plans, and a variety of additional optional benefits.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Associate degree in Information Technology, Networking, Cybersecurity or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge covering multiple areas within information security and IT infrastructure and experience with Windows and Windows Server environments. Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making abilities. Strong customer service skills with professional communication (phone, online and in person). Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills. High degree of confidentiality due to access to systems and data.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Relevant certifications such as CCNA, CCNE, CCSP, SSCP or equivalent, or ability to obtain. Familiarity with Linux Systems. Experience with Cisco and Aruba networking, server virtualization, and monitoring/logging systems. Experience with vulnerability management, patching systems, and security tools. Experience managing vendors, budgets, and technology procurement.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Take measures to secure college infrastructure including software, network switches, network servers, and storage devices.
  • Configure and install software and hardware to support NIACC infrastructure, including the main campus, remote centers, and Academic IT programs.
  • Assist in maintaining daily equipment used in the infrastructure area across the college.
  • Effectively participate in scheduled maintenance windows and coordinate system updates.
  • Set up, manage, and utilize IT monitoring solutions for local servers, third-party services, and public services.
  • Assist with the management of the desktop virtualization environment.
  • Utilize Windows Server tools to manage user and device access, desktop Operating System security and functionality updates, and automation of tasks.
  • Support and maintain endpoint imaging and deployment solutions, including systems such as Ivanti Endpoint Manager, Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (SCCM), or similar platforms.
  • Assist the Director in the development and implementation of the information security program, including policies, procedures, and guidelines, to protect the institution’s data, systems, and networks.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities and recommend appropriate measures to mitigate risks.
  • Conduct periodic security audits and assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of security measures and identify areas of improvement.
  • Assist the Director in monitoring, analyzing, and responding to security incidents and events, investigate potential breaches, and take necessary action to mitigate the impact and prevent future occurrences.
  • Develop and deliver network vulnerability scanning and automated vulnerability patching.
  • Stay informed about relevant laws, regulations, and compliance requirements and ensure the institution’s adherence to them. Keep current regarding trends and issues in the IT industry, including technologies focusing on security and network services.
  • Maintain documentation related to security policies, procedures, and incidents, and provide reports to management as needed.
  • Balance security strengths and practical applications in IT security decisions.
  • Collaborate with Technology Services staff and other departments to ensure the security of systems, networks, and applications, including implementation of security controls and management of access privileges.
  • Assist as needed with account access based on staffing changes and/or account security incidents.
  • Assist with the administration of the support ticketing system, reviewing open tickets to maintain current and up-to-date status on tickets.
  • Act as point of contact for vendors to support infrastructure technologies and collaborate with external vendors and security service providers.
  • Assist with security awareness and training programs to educate staff and students about security risks and best practices.
  • Stay up to date with emerging security threats, technologies, and industry best practices, and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Assist in disaster recovery and business continuity planning, ensuring appropriate measures are in place to safeguard critical systems and data.
  • Work cooperatively with other technical support staff and function as a liaison between networking and server management.
  • Maintain strong organizational skills, demonstrate reliability, and communicate effectively with stakeholders. Fulfill other responsibilities as needed or assigned.
