Instruction and Faculty Engagement Librarian

Overview and Responsibilities:

Job Summary

The Instruction and Engagement Outreach Librarian enables students, faculty, and staff to become independent researchers through transformative individual and group instruction, delivered face-to-face and online. This position collaborates with faculty and instructors to teach students information literacy concepts, author print and online instructional materials, deliver user-centered reference, and perform other operational tasks of the library as needed. The Saint Mary's University Libraries collaborates within the library and across campuses, giving a motivated, innovative person the opportunity to partner and collaborate with colleagues, serving both our undergraduate and graduate programs.

Salary Range: $47,000–$54,000

Main Duties & Responsibilities
  • Supports university programs, with a focus on our graduate and professional programs in Minneapolis and online.
  • Develops effective working relationships through committee, departmental, and school outreach.
  • Delivers user-centered instruction, both face-to-face and online.
  • Designs, assesses, and continuously improves instructional services and curricula.
  • Creates print, video, and interactive online instructional materials.
  • Collaborates with faculty to integrate information literacy concepts into courses.
  • Provides user-centered and efficient reference via email, chat, phone, and face-to-face or Zoom consultations.
  • Supports students in our embedded information literacy instruction program.
  • Stays current on instructional and reference procedures, strategies, and technologies.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
  • Participates actively in library and university-wide meetings and on campus committees.
  • Identifies, evaluates, and selects electronic and print resources for the library.
  • Collects data and trains staff on areas of primary responsibility (e.g., reference, instruction, etc.)
  • Consults on copyright and intellectual property issues, and creates copyright documentation.
Qualifications:
Experience and Education Requirements

Required:
  • Master of Library Science degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution or equivalent international degree.
  • Experience or education which demonstrates knowledge of information literacy concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in a collaborative work environment.
  • Qualities necessary for positive interaction with students, faculty and staff.
  • May consider other acceptable equivalent combinations of training and experience.

Preferred:
  • Information literacy teaching experience.
  • Experience assisting users with library databases, reference, and circulation inquiries.
  • Experience working in an academic library.
  • Experience using Alma or other library systems; learning management systems (e.g. Canvas); discovery layers (e.g., Primo); and instruction software such as Camtasia and Springshare products such as LibGuides.
  • Fluency in Spanish.
May consider other equivalent combinations of training and experience.

  • Uses instructional software, such as LibGuides.
  • Designs engaging web and print instructional materials.
  • Uses technology to enhance learning.
  • Anticipates and assesses user needs.
  • Develops and maintains collections for assigned liaison areas.
  • Supports, respects, and advances the mission of Saint Mary’s University as a Lasallian Catholic university.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

Physical Demands
  • Light work. Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may be very little, a job is in this category when it requires a good deal of walking or standing, or when it involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls. To be considered capable of performing a full or wide range of light work, you must have the ability to do substantially all of these activities.
