Instructional Assistant, Elementary Library/Media at Hinks Elementary

Alpena Public Schools is currently hiring Instructional Assistant, Elementary Library/Media for Hinks Elementary. Positions involve supporting students in the development of and to provide an enriched library/media center environment containing a wide variety of material which will foster intellectual growth, to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media resources.

Hours: up to 7 hours per day

The internal bid for this position is up the end of the day, Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or GED is required. Successful completion of district-provided Professional Development is required unless applicant meets the Highly Qualified standards, i.e. Associate degree, 60 semester hours of college credit, or passage of the State of Michigan approved assessment for paraprofessionals; passage of the Library/Media test administered by the Human Resources Office. Six to twelve months of library/media-related experience and/or training is preferred. Must be able to successfully show minimum reading, writing, and mathematics competency.

Position Title: Instructional Assistant, Elementary Library/Media
Department: Instruction
Reports To: Building Principal

SUMMARY: To assist in the development of and to provide an enriched library/media center environment containing a wide variety of material which will foster intellectual growth, to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media resources.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Applies established procedures on the operation of electronic circulation and card catalog system.
  • Performs clerical duties as necessary.
  • Communicates with teachers and coordinates lessons.
  • Works with small groups of students.
  • Works with class groups of children.
  • Aids in research on topical issues.
  • Stays knowledgeable about media collection.
  • Promotes print/non-print media for areas of research.
  • Assists in the physical moving and relocation of materials, furniture and equipment.
  • Assists with other IA assignments (LRE, Overload, Lunchroom, etc.) when necessary.
  • Is able to multitask, i.e. performing several tasks at once.
  • Ability to operate computer using word processing, databases, and spreadsheets.
  • Processes orders, balances Media Center budgets, and shelves books.
  • Write notes/letters to staff, parents, and publishers.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Keeps accurate inventory of library materials, including all technology.
  • Troubleshoots basic computer errors.
  • Coordinates and/or assists with special events in the library, including book fairs, showcases of student work, and others.
  • Follows all Board policies and District procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises students and parent volunteers.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence and effectively present information in one-on-one, small group, and classroom situations to students, parents, and/or staff.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to perform basic arithmetical calculations.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to operate a computer using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and other various applications. Ability to use electronic research databases and school-networked toolkits. Ability to use projectors, photocopy machines, and possess basic computer troubleshooting skills. Prefer knowledge of Bright Resource by Lumen Touch. Ability to assume responsibility for supervising students and understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, and to operate office equipment; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to escort students and, after proper training, restrain students in an emergency situation.
