Instructional Associate

Instructional Associate (Non-Exempt)

General Description

Under the direction of the Executive Director an Instructional Associate will support SDGVA Educators &
Education Specialists in reinforcing instruction to both General Education & Special Education students.
Support may be provided in terms of one-on-one, small group or whole group settings as needed during the academic school year or for Extended School Year (ESY). Calendars for each Instructional Associate are determined by Administration. Instructional Associates are assigned focus areas of support by the
Executive Director in a variety of subject areas, duties and responsibilities as needed at SDGVA.

Overarching Roles:
● Support all SDGVA students, educators and staff to achieve its mission, vision and LCAP goals.
● Work collaboratively to achieve the overall measurable goals as listed in the charter.
● Adapt and adjust to current needs of SDGVA environment in a positive manner including flexibility requested by administration regarding schedules, duties,etc.
● Flexible and positive with duties assigned by Administration throughout the school year.

General Duties (Non-Exhaustive):
● Demonstrate the ability to work with the culturally and linguistically diverse student populations
● Able to work with GenEd & SpEd students on both a regular and substitute basis in whole group, small group and one-on-one supervision status.
● Willing and able to conduct all of the following duties for SDGVA operational purposes if requested: Opening/Closing Duty, Traffic Duty, Gate Duty, Lunch Duty, Rotunda Duty, Elementary
Recess Duty, Middle-School Recess Duty, After-School Recess Duty, Field-Trip/Off Site Duty,
Overnight Supervision Duty and/or Rainy-Day Modified Duty.

● Understanding of and willingness to implement instruction and curriculum assigned
● Maintains a classroom atmosphere conducive to learning
● Establishes a cooperative relationship with all GenEd & SpEd students from K-8th Grade
● Maintain positive professional demeanor amongst all stakeholders including families & community
● Is proactive and maintains a safe environment while on supervision
● Conduct safety patrol before/after-school with traffic, if requested by Administration.
● Participate in professional development, if requested.
● Reporting times vary for each Instructional Associate.
● School begins for students at 8am and ends at 2:30pm. (subject to change)

Qualifications:

● Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
● Willing to work with students and maintain a respectful learning environment for all stakeholders
● Previous experience working with students of both general education and special needs
● Proof of Tuberculosis clearance every four years
● Fingerprint clearance by the Department of Justice.
● CPR/ 1st Aid Certification.
● Be able to lift up to 75 pounds .
● Physically able to move furniture, equipment and use a lift or hand truck.
● In good physical condition for student supervision duties indoors and outdoors

● Be able to stand or sit for long periods of time, take students to class and participate in school events that require physical activity.

Requisite Abilities
● Must be willing to work in/with and support a communicative and collaborative team model with a positive professional demeanor.
● Consistently refrain from problem-saturated conversations and promote solution-based discourse when faced with concerns regarding students, staff, operations and programming at SDGVA.
● Operate standard office equipment and related software applications
● Communicate effectively orally and in writing with adults and GenEd + SpEd students K-8th.
● Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others (adults and students)
● Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action regarding student academic achievement, behavior leadership and/ or interactions with parents /guardians or colleagues
● Plan, organize and effectively complete work required on an ongoing basis
● Meet schedules and timelines as defined by colleagues and /or administration
● Maintain records and prepare required reports for colleagues and / or administration, such as IEP, assessments reports, accountability measures and charter renewal
● Work independently with little direction required by administration or SDGVA colleagues
● Read, interpret, agree, apply, and explain rules , regulations, policies,and procedures for SDGVA
● Maintain positive professional demeanor and actively avoid problem-saturated conversations, gossip and cliques.
● Conduct safety patrol before/after-school with traffic, if requested by Administration.

Parent-Community Involvement (Assigned to all IA Roles)
● Engage in a professional manner that represents SDGVA communication values with parents/ guardians during supervision of students in & out of classroom i.e 6-to-6 care or ASES Program.
● Safety both inside and outside the classroom (including drop off and pick up)
● Participate professionally in community events that involve SDGVA families as requested.

Leadership Duties (Determined by Administration)

Response to Intervention Support (ELA or Mathematics or Social-Emotional)
A Response to Intervention team member is responsible for push-in and pull-out intervention support in planning instruction and/or adaption of standards-based curriculum in ELA or Mathematics or utilizing the
Social-Emotional framework within a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) model to facilitate students' learning. Evaluate and measure the effectiveness of specific MTSS strategies and interventions in order to refine tiered levels of support.

● Understanding of, willingness to and capacity for implementing CA CCSS instruction and curriculum assigned in all content areas
● Configure lessons to meet the individual needs of students needing intervention strategies as provided by MTSS. (Examples include but are not limited to: 1) If a student is an auditory learner, or learns by listening, prepare recordings giving additional examples from the day’s lesson. 2)
Some lessons are for small groups while others are for individuals.

● Employ effective pedagogical practices that meet the needs of our culturally and linguistically diverse student population.

● Work one-on-one or in small groups with students assigned to you who need intervention in a separate classroom. Spend time helping other non-intervention students when you are in the classroom. While you are in the classroom, serve as a team teacher.

● Maintains and collects students’ work samples, as pertains to Response to Intervention students, for the purpose of documenting activities and/or providing reliable information to the Director of Academic Achievement and/or general education teacher.

● Provides student data digitally to the Director of Academic Achievement regarding progress or regression of student academic skills on an ongoing basis.

● Maintains effective behavior management in the classroom, small group or individual basis.
● Implements useful diagnostic and progress assessment measures (informal & formal)
● Selects and uses effective instructional methods and learning materials
● Establishes a cooperative relationship with all assigned students
● Assess student needs and creates differentiated curricular plans to meet those needs
● Comply with state and federal guidelines regarding implementation of Individualized Education

Plans (IEPs), and 504 plans.
● Demonstrate the ability to work with students, parents/guardians and colleagues
● Committed to student success and assumes responsibility for student achievement

● Participate in the Student Support Team (SST) process
● Use data to identify and group students who need additional supports.
● Maintain and communicate the results of formative and summative testing/evaluation of assigned students to their teacher, school administrators and parents in a timely fashion.
● If applicable, conduct daily assessments such as (but not limited to) fluency rate, informal running records, number sense pre/post concepts, Fastbridge assessments, etc. on RTI students.
● Provide monthly updates on progress for RTI students to Director of Academic Achievement
● Maintaining student records evidence for all relatable goals and case management meetings.
● Provide progress reports to classroom teacher(s) on their RTI students via Google Docs on a monthly basis. Provide Director of Academic Achievement and/or general education teacher requested RTI/504/IEP documentation when requested within 24 hours.

● Classroom management supervision during after-school care for completion of student homework while Educators, Education Specialists and IA Team Members pedagogical plan.

ELD support will administer all aspects of the English Learner (EL) program at SDGVA. ELD works with students and teachers to improve student learning and teacher practice. ELD support plans and implements individual and small group learning experiences that will expand and refine understanding about research-based effective instruction. ELD supports after-school supervision to permit pedagogical planning teams to meet.

● Build relationships within school community e.g. parents, guardians, community stakeholders

Special Education Support (Determined by Administration)
Assist teachers in the classroom, supervise students outside of the classroom, or provide administrative support for students identified by Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or 504s.
These students may have a wide variety of mental, emotional, physical, and learning disabilities including but not limited to autism spectrum disorders and emotional disorders, such as anxiety and depression.

● Adapts classroom work under the direction of the classroom teacher and Educational

Specialists for the purpose of providing a method to support and/or reinforce classroom objectives and IEP goals for individual SpEd Student(s).

● Assist student(s) individually or in small groups in reading, math, science, and social studies, or other courses to support IEP goals

● Collaborate in GenEd classroom environment through consultation and co-teaching
● Provides modifications and accommodations per students’ IEPs
● Confers with teachers and appropriate personnel for the purpose of recording student progress and implementing student objectives per IEP goals
● Implements, under the supervision of the Educational Specialists and Director of Special

Education, instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of assisting the teacher in improving student academic successes through a defined course of study per IEP goals

● Prepares records, documentation, and clerical functions for the purpose of supporting the classroom teacher, the Education Specialists, and/or Director of Special Education in providing necessary materials and information

● Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities, per IEP goals

● Support in operating Extended School Year (ESY) program *if a 12 month employee
● Attends meetings for the purpose of receiving and conveying information
● Perform other duties as instructed by the Education Specialists, Director of Special

Education, and/or Executive Director
● Implement lessons whole group, small group and one-on-one basis as needed
● Implements Fred Jones techniques for classroom management in whole group, small group and on one-on-one basis such as meaning business, reducing backtalk, etc.

Pedagogical Collaboration Support (Determined by Administration)

Established for the purpose/s of helping students develop and strengthen academic, physical and social skills by providing assistance and tutoring to students in the before/after school program. Responsible for providing appropriate supervision, academic tutoring and enrichment programming for designated student groups.

● Proactive response to any issues indoor/outdoor
● Other duties as assigned.
● Make recommendations if problems arise for improvement on equipment, supplies, facility and program needs.
● Clean up room after program is finished as school protocols request

Behavior Support & Social Thinking Support (Determined by Administration)

● Ensure computer and related equipment in the school is working properly; arrange for needed maintenance. Troubleshoot problems with computers and other equipment

● Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of teachers.

STEM Support (Determined by Administration)
