Instructional Designer-Legal Training Learning Paths

Instructional Designer

NBI, an established leader in the development of professional continuing education seminars and live online events across the U.S., has an exciting opportunity.

We are seeking an experienced Instructional Designer to develop structured, practice-focused learning paths within the legal and professional services space. This role will partner closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) to translate real-world expertise into engaging, competency-based learning experiences.

The ideal candidate is both strategic and execution-oriented — able to architect learning pathways from concept through launch, while ensuring clarity, consistency, high engagement, and skill development. This is not a content writing role; it is a curriculum design and learning architecture role focused on applied skill-building.

Job Responsibilities

  • Partner directly with subject matter experts to extract, organize, and structure domain expertise into cohesive learning programs
  • Design comprehensive learning pathways, including defined learning objectives, module sequencing, and skill progression

  • Translate complex professional concepts into clear, learner-centered instructional experiences
  • Build and structure courses within a learning management system (LMS)
  • Ensure consistency in format, structure, and learner experience across programs
  • Apply adult learning principles to optimize engagement and retention
  • Create repeatable templates and documentation to support scalable content development
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with leadership and stakeholders to align learning programs with strategic goals
  • Review and refine content based on feedback and performance data

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Organizational Development, or a related field (Master’s preferred)
  • Strong understanding of adult learning theory and applied learning methodologies
  • Experience designing structured, competency-based learning programs
  • Comfort working directly with senior professionals and subject matter experts in a highly professional field (Law)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines simultaneously

Experience

  • 3+ years of instructional design experience in professional education, corporate training, or related environments
  • Experience collaborating with subject matter experts to develop structured curriculum
  • Experience building and organizing courses within a learning management system
  • Demonstrated experience designing applied, skills-based learning experiences (not solely informational content)
  • Experience developing learning pathways or multi-module programs preferred
  • Experience in legal or professional services education is a plus

Skills

  • Curriculum architecture and learning pathway design
  • Learning objective development and alignment
  • Assessment and applied exercise design
  • Strong interviewing and facilitation skills with SMEs
  • Clear and concise written communication
  • Project management and organizational skills
  • Systems thinking and ability to create scalable processes
