BSI Engineering is searching for a student interested in an exciting opportunity to work with our Instrumentation, Controls, and Automation Department. Our ICA Department engineers design /select process instrumentation and control systems for use in chemical manufacturing, food and beverage, renewable energies, pharmaceutical, and aviation industries. The department has design engineering experience with all aspects of PLC & DCS based control system design, implementation, retrofits, hybrid control systems, and instrumentation projects.
We are seeking an Instrumentation & Controls Designer co-op employee for the Spring of 2026. We will provide a learning environment supervised by senior engineers and designers with extensive experience in instrumentation and automation. BSI recognizes the value in helping develop future Designers to meet the needs of industry and is prepared to pair each co-op employee with a mentor/staff who are eager to share their knowledge with the next generation of automation professionals.
Responsibilities and Scope
- AutoCAD development and modification of Instrumentation Project drawings including control panel drawings, instrument plan drawings, PLC/DCS card elementary drawings, Instrumentation Loop drawings, and miscellaneous wiring diagrams
- Data entry of related project information into an Instrumentation and Control Systems Database
- Assists in the development of mechanical and electrical instrument installation details
- Assists in the development of cable schedules and wiring diagrams for instrumentation and control panels
- Review of control system and instrument cut sheets / installation manuals
- Performs necessary calculations and design effort to prepare deliverables
- Utilizes design criteria document(s) to meet the project objectives
- Coordinates work with engineers and designers for project-based work
- Occasionally interfaces with other design discipline counterparts and project management
- Participates in multi-discipline squad checks of deliverables before issuance to clients
- Follows BSI Standard Operating Procedures and Client Standards as required
- Assists in gathering field data as required
Qualifications
- Pursuing an Associates or Bachelor of Science in an Engineering related Degree, preferably in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering or in a secondary education program encompassing the scope above
- Interest in PLC/DCS and instrumentation design
- History of co-ops or internships are a plus
- General AutoCAD skills, minimum 6 months experience or one semester of relevant class experience
- Knowledge in PLC design and hardware is a plus
- Learning process control fundamentals
- General knowledge of common instrumentation and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) is a plus
- General Microsoft Excel & Word skills, knowledge of Access a plus
- Ability to set priorities and manage multiple tasks
- Developing written and oral communication skills
Hourly Rate: $17.50 - $22/hr. based on previous experience and college semesters completed
