Job Title: Instrumentation & Controls Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY
The Instrumentation & Controls Specialist supports the commissioning of SCADA and Protection &
Controls systems for utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS),
hydroelectric, and geothermal projects across the United States. This safety-sensitive role is responsible
for reviewing engineering drawings, codes, and specifications to ensure proper implementation of
commissioning and startup procedures that meet contractual and operational requirements. The position
supports multiple projects nationally and requires frequent travel.
Travel Requirement: 70%–80%
Per Diem: Provided during travel
Project Locations Include: Maine, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Texas, North Carolina, New York,
Illinois, Virginia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and others.
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*
● Review engineering drawings and specifications to support SCADA commissioning procedures
with SCADA vendors.
● Verify DAS/SCADA system installation against design drawings; generate submittals, RFIs, and
SCADA test reports.
● Lead field troubleshooting of DAS/SCADA equipment and validate system data integration.
● Collaborate with SCADA providers to integrate inverters, trackers, MET stations, and other
equipment into the SCADA platform; troubleshoot communication issues.
● Support commissioning of Power Plant Controllers (PPC), HMI servers, communication
gateways, and PLCs.
● Support testing and commissioning of substation and/or point of interconnection primary and
protection relay equipment.
● Assist with project backfeed, equipment energization, and utility testing to validate system
performance and compliance.
● Troubleshoot alarms and communication interfaces including CAT5e and fiber optics.

● Support Ethernet network commissioning, including configuration updates for switches and
firewalls.
● Collaborate with internal teams to develop innovative solutions and commissioning tools.
● Review and support pre-functional checklists and functional testing procedures for utility-scale
solar and BESS projects.
● Submit work order tickets to OEMs and vendors for failed equipment.
● Work with Quality and Commissioning teams to create and maintain commissioning logs.
● Respond to service calls, diagnose root causes, and restore system performance.
● Perform small-scale repairs, including replacement of PV wire, RS-485 and CAT-6
communication lines.
● Inspect and verify proper operation of inverters, combiner boxes, DAS equipment, and other
balance-of-system components.
● Conduct preventative maintenance including torque checks, thermal imaging, equipment
cleaning, and vegetation review.
● Document work performed, including tests, repairs, and parts used; provide clear reporting to
management.
● Maintain inventory of spare parts, tools, and consumables; ensure equipment is in safe working
condition.
● Follow all safety procedures, NFPA 70E guidelines, and site-specific safety requirements.
● Coordinate with utilities, site owners, and internal teams to support system performance and
maintenance scheduling.
● Stay current with applicable technical processes, standards, and best practices.
● Organize, plan, and prioritize multiple tasks in a timely and effective manner.
● Adhere to and support Health, Safety & Environmental, and Sustainability Policies.
● Perform other duties as assigned by Quality and Commissioning leadership.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
● Minimum 4+ years DAS/SCADA commissioning experience on utility-scale solar projects.
● Proficiency in reading design documents for utility-scale solar, BESS, and substations.
● Ability to interpret protection schemes, event logs, and equipment specifications.

● Strong understanding of major electrical equipment such as switchgear, inverters, MV
transformers, and MV distribution systems.
● Expertise in PV solar equipment including modules, combiner boxes, trackers, inverters,
DAS/SCADA components, communication hardware, and meteorological sensors.
● Strong SCADA troubleshooting skills.
● Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
● Strong written, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (NICE-TO-HAVES)
● Experience developing SCADA configurations for automation controllers such as SEL-RTAC or
other PLCs.
● Experience with Buildertrend or Procore software.
● Ability to travel on short notice for short- or long-term assignments.
● Experience developing integrated commissioning and startup processes.
EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS
● AA in EET or BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related
field.
● Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
WORK ENVIRONMENT / JOB CONDITIONS
● 70%–80% travel required; per diem provided while on project sites.
● Ability to receive and execute tasks from senior technicians with attention to safety.
● Must comply with all company safety standards, OSHA requirements, and NFPA 70E.
● Outdoor work environment with exposure to varying weather conditions.
● Ability to sit, stoop, kneel, bend, stand, and walk for extended periods (8–10 hours per day).
● Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs occasionally.
● Completion of required OSHA training.
