Job Title: High School Intense/Severe Special Education Teacher

Grade Level: Grades Kg-4th

Department: Instructional Staff / Special Education

Reports To: School Principal and Director of Special Education

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Type: Full-Time, 185-Day Contract

Job Summary:

The Intense/Severe Special Education Teacher provides specialized, individualized instruction and support to students with significant cognitive, physical, emotional, and behavioral disabilities in grades KG-4th. The teacher designs and delivers instruction aligned with Indiana Academic Standards, individualized IEP goals, and the Indiana RISE Teacher Effectiveness Rubric. The teacher collaborates with families, general education staff, and multidisciplinary teams to foster student independence, safety, and post-secondary preparedness.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Domain 1: Planning and Preparation

  • Develop standards-based, individualized lesson plans tailored to students’ unique needs and IEP goals.

  • Utilize data and assessments to design instructional and behavioral interventions that support student growth.

  • Prepare and adapt instructional materials, including assistive technology and augmentative communication systems.


Domain 2: Classroom Environment

  • Establish and maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment conducive to intense/severe special needs students.

  • Implement proactive behavior management plans and safety protocols consistent with student needs and district guidelines.

  • Promote respectful interactions and foster positive relationships among students, staff, and families.


Domain 3: Instruction

  • Deliver clear, purposeful, and evidence-based instruction focusing on academic, functional, communication, and behavioral skills.

  • Use ongoing formative assessment and progress monitoring to adjust instruction and provide timely feedback aligned with IEP objectives.

  • Collaborate with paraprofessionals and related service providers to support consistency and effectiveness across learning environments.


Domain 4: Professional Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively with families, staff, and community partners regarding student progress and needs.

  • Maintain accurate documentation for IEP compliance, state and federal regulations, and district policies.

  • Engage in professional development to remain current with best practices for intense/severe special education.

  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, case conferences, and transition planning.


Other Duties as Assigned:

  • Complete additional tasks or responsibilities assigned by the administration that support school goals, student success, and compliance with educational mandates.

  • Assist with school-wide programs, professional learning communities, and extracurricular activities as appropriate.


Required Qualifications:

  • Valid Indiana Teaching License with certification in Special Education: Intense/Severe Interventions Elementary.

  • Knowledge of Indiana Academic Standards, IDEA, Article 7, and the Indiana RISE Teacher Effectiveness Rubric.

  • Demonstrated experience working with students with severe disabilities, including behavior support and functional curriculum.

  • Effective collaboration, communication, and classroom management skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with assistive technology and augmentative communication devices.

  • Training in crisis intervention and behavior support (e.g., CPI, PBIS).


Experience with transition planning and community-based instructional methods.
