Position Summary:


The Human Resources Intern will support the Human Resources team in delivering high quality HR services across multiple HR functions within Port Houston’s People Division. This internship provides hands on exposure to core HR functions including recruitment, employee engagement, workforce analytics, compliance, compensation and HR operations.
Under the guidance of HR leadership and team members, the intern will support day-to-day HR activities, assist with special projects, and contribute to initiatives that enhance employee experience and operational efficiency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assist with recruitment activities, including:

  • Reviewing resumes
  • Coordinating interviews
  • Communicating with candidates
  • Supporting onboarding processes

Support HR operations by:

  • Assisting with data entry and reporting in HRIS
  • Maintaining accurate employee records
  • Supporting policy acknowledgment tracking

Participate in employee engagement initiatives, including:

  • Internship program coordination
  • Event planning support
  • Employee communication drafting


Assist with workforce analytics by:

  • Compiling data for reports and dashboards
  • Supporting turnover and headcount tracking
  • Preparing summary presentations for leadership

Support compliance initiatives such as:

  • I-9 documentation tracking
  • Policy documentation updates
  • Audit preparation assistance

Contribute to special HR projects and other HR duties as assigned.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Students must be currently enrolled in and have already completed two semesters in an undergraduate or graduate degree program
  • 2027/2028 graduation status preferred (junior/senior level)
  • May 2026 graduates are not eligible unless enrolling in graduate program in Fall 2026
  • Students must either attend a Houston area college/university or have a permanent residence within a commutable distance
  • Students must be in good academic standing to apply for an internship; a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7 is preferred
  • Students must be able to work throughout the established twelve-week (12) program dates

  • Demonstrates strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Demonstrates attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to prepare business cases and explain and/or support the recommended course of action
  • Ability to self-manage work expectations
  • Ability to work as an individual contributor and/or within a team
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including ability to listen to business partners and understand their expectations and requirements
  • Strong interpersonal and time management skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Willingness to learn
  • Punctuality is key
