Summary

Under direct supervision of a division head or designee, the Environmental Services Intern learns to provide professional services in area of assignment. Assists in research, development, organization, and implementation of new and improved product diversion from the Frisco waste stream. The Environmental Services Intern is also responsible for assisting in volunteer and event coordination, managing data, and maintaining reports.

The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.

Essential Job Functions & Other Important Duties

  • Learns to conduct research, analyze data, and create reports.
  • Learns to assist in coalition / community building sustainability projects.
  • Learns application techniques for grant programs and funding opportunities.
  • Learns to write and prepare award applications and presentations for conferences.
  • Attends meetings and plays an active role in FISD solid waste reduction strategies.
  • Assists in coordinating volunteering opportunities for Adopt-A-Street, Clean it & Green it, Teens4Green.
  • Maintains and inputs data from volunteer activities.
  • Assists in annual Clean It & Green It event planning, organizing, and implementing.

Other Important Duties:
  • Attends City and Environmental Services events on evenings and weekends.
  • May be required to work extended hours, evenings, and weekends.
  • Participates in local, regional, and national organizations focused on waste reduction/recycling and environmental programs.
  • May travel to attend meetings, conferences, special events and training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.

Job Requirements

  • Knowledge of principles and practices in area of study assignment.
  • Knowledge of computers and related equipment, hardware, and software applicable to area of assignment, specifically Microsoft Word, Power Point, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of technical tools, practices, or methods in area of assignment.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communications.
  • Skill in planning and implementing departmental procedures and objectives.
  • Skill in effectively delegating duties to assigned paraprofessional or technical staff.
  • Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns.

Education, Experience, and Certifications/Licenses:
  • Currently enrolled as a Junior or Senior in a Bachelor's program majoring in education, earth sciences, environmental sciences, environmental studies public administration, or business administration or related field.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check, and MVR check.
  • Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver's License.

  • Work is performed in an office setting, off site and at special events.
  • Feeling – perceiving attributes of objects by touch with skin, fingertips.
  • Fingering – picking, pinching, typing, working with fingers rather than hand.
  • Hearing 1 – perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, receive information.
  • Mental Acuity – ability to make rational decisions through sound logic, deductive reasoning.
  • Reaching – extending hands or arms in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
  • Speaking – expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
  • Talking 1- expressing ideas by spoken word.
  • Visual Acuity 1 - prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.
  • Visual Acuity 2 - color, depth perception, field of vision.
  • Visual Acuity 3 - determine accuracy, neatness, observe facilities/structures.

Work Environment:
  • Work performed is primarily sedentary work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Equipment and Tools Utilized:
  • Equipment utilized includes computer, copier, calculator, and other standard office equipment and department vehicles.
