Internship
Digi International is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Summer IT Intern to join our Information Technology team. This is a hands-on internship designed to provide real-world experience across IT operations, with a focus on IT equipment inventory management, desktop provisioning and end-user support, and developing AI-powered self-service solutions for common enterprise user issues.
The Summer IT Intern will work closely with IT infrastructure and support staff to improve operational efficiency, maintain accurate asset records, streamline new-hire device provisioning, and explore how AI tools can reduce ticket volume and accelerate issue resolution for enterprise users. This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to enterprise IT environments while making a tangible impact on the team.
What You Will Do
- Conduct a comprehensive audit of IT hardware assets (laptops, monitors, docking stations, peripherals) across all Digi locations, reconciling physical inventory against asset management records.
- Develop and maintain accurate IT asset tracking documentation, including lifecycle status, assignment history, and warranty information to support procurement planning.
- Assist with desktop provisioning workflows including imaging, configuring, and deploying Windows and macOS devices for new hires, replacements, and refreshes.
- Provide frontline desktop support for end users, troubleshooting hardware, software, and connectivity issues and escalating complex problems to senior staff.
- Research, design, and prototype an AI-powered self-service solution (e.g., chatbot, knowledge base, or automated triage tool) to help employees resolve common IT issues such as password resets, VPN connectivity, printer setup, and software installation requests.
- Document standard operating procedures for recurring support tasks and contribute to an internal IT knowledge base.
- Collaborate with IT team members on ad hoc projects related to infrastructure upgrades, office moves, or system deployments as needed.
- Present findings and recommendations from the internship projects to IT leadership at the conclusion of the program.
Who You Are and What You Bring
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related field (rising Junior or Senior preferred).
- Foundational understanding of PC hardware, Windows and macOS operating systems, and common enterprise software (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace).
- Familiarity with networking fundamentals (Wi-Fi, VPN, DNS, DHCP) and basic troubleshooting methodology.
- Interest in or experience with AI and automation tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Power Automate, or similar platforms.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly for inventory and documentation tasks.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to support non-technical end users.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Desired But Not Required
- Previous IT helpdesk, desktop support, or internship experience.
- Experience with IT asset management tools (e.g., Snipe-IT, Lansweeper, or ServiceNow CMDB).
- Familiarity with endpoint management platforms such as Microsoft Intune, SCCM, or Jamf.
- Exposure to scripting or automation (PowerShell, Python, or Bash).
- Relevant coursework or certifications such as CompTIA A+, ITIL Foundations, or Google IT Support Professional Certificate.
Location: Hopkins, MN (onsite preferred; hybrid considered).
