INTERN - IT Intern -Summer 2026 - Huntsville, AL

CFD Research is looking to fill our intern class for the Summer of 2026. The program runs 8-10 weeks over the Summer and has flexible start and finish dates based on candidate's availability (typically mid-May to August).

Each CFD Research Internship has both a mentor and technical manager to help guide them on their research project over the summer. In addition to challenging technical work, CFD Research's program offers professional development and social activities designed to help our interns have a great, all-around summer internship experience.

CFD Research's Information Technology group supports a broad set of internal staff, including highly technical research and engineering staff. In this role, the candidate will primarily support the set up and maintenance of workstations and network infrastructure. Candidate will also assist in implementing, preserving, and maintaining CMMC security standards while consistently following operating procedures. Candidate will follow the installation through to be sure no components of the install or are missed and all user needs are met. Candidate must ensure all work is done at a professional level in functionality and appearance.
The candidate will be an initial point of contact for troubleshooting end-user related issues as well. The candidate should demonstrate an ability to provide customer-focused service to the internal staff, maintain a professional demeanor, and manage users' expectations. This is accomplished through providing IT solutions to meet end-user needs while managing internal operating & security requirements.

Basic Responsibilities:

• Provide courteous and professional support to users and internal stakeholders
• Coordinate set up of computing resources and installation of required software
• Efficient, timely, and effective response to internal user requests for support/troubleshooting while adhering to internal operating procedures
• Maintain smooth operation of multi-user/multi-platform computer systems for desktops and server environments
• Monitor and manage system resources, (e.g., CPU usage, disk usage, and response times) to maintain operating efficiency
• Perform systems security administration functions, including creating user profiles and accounts and other tasks as needed
• Other duties may include maintaining system documentation, tuning system performance and allocating mass storage

Basic Qualifications:

• Candidate must be a US Citizen
• Must be able to acquire and maintain a security clearance
• Position requires at least a High School Diploma (or equivalent) and 3 years of experience in Network Administration, PC Support and/or Help Desk environment
• Knowledge of Windows operating systems, Microsoft 365 Suite, Windows Domain architecture, Information Technology Security, Routers and Firewalls, and effective knowledge of both wired and wireless Local Area Network technologies. Linux experience is a plus.
• Candidate must be able to demonstrate an ability to troubleshoot computer workstations and servers, basic application and networking issues in small/medium business environments.
• Experience with support of varied Microsoft network environments.
• Understanding of CMMC guidelines strongly preferred.
