Clinical responsibilities
- Diagnosing heart conditions: Interpret diagnostic tests such as cardiac catheterizations, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), echocardiograms, and stress tests to evaluate a patient's cardiovascular health.
- Performing interventional procedures: Use catheters to perform procedures like angioplasty and stent placement to open narrowed or blocked arteries.
- Emergency care: Respond to and treat emergencies such as heart attacks (myocardial infarction) by performing life-saving procedures to restore blood flow.
- Structural heart interventions: Repair or replace heart valves and close congenital heart defects (e.g., atrial septal defects) using catheter-based techniques.
- Peripheral vascular interventions: Treat conditions affecting blood vessels outside the heart, such as carotid or peripheral artery disease, using angioplasty and stenting.
- Patient management: Provide pre- and post-procedure care, manage patient medications, and track recovery.
Collaborative and professional responsibilities
- Patient consultation: Consult with patients to discuss their diagnosis, explain treatment options, and provide information on post-procedure care.
- Collaboration with healthcare teams: Work with a multidisciplinary team, including general cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, nurses, and technicians, to coordinate comprehensive patient treatment.
Common procedures performed
- Coronary Angioplasty and Stenting: A catheter with a balloon is used to open blocked coronary arteries, and a stent is often placed to keep the artery open.
- Cardiac Catheterization: A diagnostic procedure where a catheter is threaded through a blood vessel to the heart to evaluate heart function and blood flow.
- Atherectomy: The removal of plaque buildup from the walls of arteries.
- Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR): A minimally invasive procedure to replace a narrowed aortic valve.
- Valvuloplasty: The use of a balloon catheter to widen a narrowed heart valve.
- Closure of congenital heart defects: Repair holes in the heart, such as atrial septal defects (ASD).
- Thrombectomy: The removal of blood clots from arteries.
