Job Summary

The IT Specialist provides on-site technical support for hardware, software, and peripheral systems across Jerome County. This role ensures reliable network performance, assists users across all departments, and maintains a secure and efficient IT environment. Work is performed independently under the guidance of the IT Manager.

Essential Duties

  • Provide technical support for desktops, laptops, printers, mobile devices, and peripherals.
  • Install, configure, and maintain hardware and software systems.
  • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot connectivity or system issues.
  • Assist with administration of servers, backups, and firewalls, including updates and troubleshooting.
  • Support Microsoft 365 applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, etc.) and other county software.
  • Set up new equipment and maintain existing devices for county staff.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of IT systems, procedures, and support requests.
  • Use and improve the IT ticketing system to track and resolve issues.
  • Collaborate with departments to meet technological needs and support security practices.
  • Assist with county website support and vendor coordination.
  • Participate in meetings with departments and leadership as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Secondary Duties

  • Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours support as needed.
  • Assist with IT projects, upgrades, and system implementations.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Working knowledge of computer systems, networks, and virtualization (e.g., VMware preferred).
  • Experience or familiarity with server administration, backup systems, and firewall management.
  • Working knowledge of cybersecurity principles and practical IT security practices.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and documentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general business software.
  • Ability to explain technical information to non-technical users.
  • Strong customer service, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Education & Experience

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in IT or related field preferred.
  • 2–5 years of relevant IT support experience preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • IT certifications (CompTIA A+, Network+, etc.) are a plus.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Work is primarily office-based but requires travel to multiple county facilities and departments.
  • Frequent interaction with employees, vendors, and the public.
  • May be required to install, configure, and set up equipment, including desktops, laptops, printers, and other peripherals.
  • Frequent sitting (6+ hours per day) and computer use.
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs; frequent lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching to access equipment, cables, or server racks.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, operating computers, and manipulating small IT components.
  • Frequent use of eyes for reading screens, monitoring systems, and reviewing documentation.
  • Work may require navigating different facilities, including storage areas, server rooms, or equipment closets.
  • Ability to function safely and efficiently in various office and facility environments while accomplishing technical tasks.

Travel Requirements

  • Frequent travel between county departments.
  • Occasional travel within Idaho for training.
  • Personal transportation may be required.
