IT Support/Network Technician

Job Title: Part-Time On-Site IT Support / Network Technician (Boston, MA)

Location: Downtown Boston, MA Onsite

Engagement: Part-time (a few hours per week)

***NOTE: Please read the following regarding working hours***

  • Phase 1 Discovery: Up to 1 full day on-site (likely less) for initial assessment and remediation plan
  • Phase 2 Ongoing: Approx. ~10 hours/month ongoing maintenance/support (flexible scheduling)

Role Overview:

We are seeking an IT generalist / network technician to provide hands-on support for their downtown office. The office recently relocated and the IT closets were moved but are not being actively maintained. The environment is currently functional, but needs a structured assessment, cleanup, documentation, and ongoing monthly care.

This is a great fit for someone who is local, self-directed, and comfortable coordinating directly with vendors and handling light on-site troubleshooting and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

Phase 1: Discovery / Site Assessment (up to 1 full day)

  • Perform an on-site assessment of the office IT setup, including two IT closet areas
  • Build an inventory of network gear and connections (rack/patching/cabling)
  • Create rack elevations / documentation (what’s installed, where, and how it’s connected)
  • Identify gaps in patching, updates, labeling, organization, and physical security
  • Evaluate whether to consolidate to a single MDF/closet setup for maintainability
  • Partner with client + vendors to define the initial remediation plan and effort estimate Phase 2: Ongoing Monthly Support (~10 hrs/month)
  • Provide recurring on-site support (a few hours/week as needed)
  • Perform routine network health checks, patching, and basic maintenance
  • Serve as on-site point person for vendor coordination (ex: ISP vendors, alarm/building vendor)
  • Assist with restoring/maintaining connectivity needed for the alarm system (connectivity enablement)
  • Provide light on-call support for “disaster” scenarios (expected to be infrequent)

Technical Environment (Known):

  • FortiGate firewalls + FortiSwitches
  • Meraki wireless access points
  • ISP: Crown Castle
  • Small UPS presence (may need review/monitoring)
  • No major server footprint expected on-site

Required Skills:

  • Strong hands-on experience with LAN/WAN networking and troubleshooting
  • Experience working in network closets: patching, cabling basics, labeling, documenting
  • Familiarity with wireless/Wi-Fi troubleshooting (Meraki strongly preferred)
  • Comfort supporting / working around Fortinet (FortiGate/FortiSwitch) environments
  • Vendor coordination experience (ISP, alarm/building/security vendors)
  • Strong communication skills; able to document clearly and work independently on-site Nice to Have:
  • Fortinet + Meraki experience in small office / branch environments
  • Structured cabling coordination (working with vendors to run/clean up cabling)
  • Experience with building security/alarm connectivity troubleshooting
  • Experience in corporate office environments with “light footprint” IT
