A Jail Instructor (GED/Hiset) plays a key role in supporting currently and formerly incarcerated adult men and women by providing High School Equivalency education within a correctional setting and reentry-focused programs.
In this position, the instructor focuses on helping students build the academic skills necessary to earn their diploma.
The Jail Instructor leads structured classroom instruction and individualized academic support in the five subject areas: Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and Writing, while fostering a supportive learning environment that encourages persistence, confidence, and academic achievement.
As a Jail Instructor, you will work directly with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated adults, helping them overcome educational barriers and make meaningful progress toward completing their high school equivalency. We are seeking a compassionate, patient, and dedicated educator committed to empowering individuals through education.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver High School Equivalency (HSE) instruction to currently and formerly incarcerated adult students
- Teach and adapt lesson plans in the five subject areas: Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and Writing
- Provide both group instruction and individualized academic support for students with varying educational levels
- Assess student progress using practice tests, academic evaluations, and ongoing monitoring
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, testing readiness, and academic progress
- Help students develop test-taking strategies, study habits, and academic confidence
- Maintain organized classroom materials and instructional resources
- Follow all correctional facility security procedures and classroom guidelines
Skills Required
- Strong knowledge of adult education or High School Equivalency instruction
- Strong classroom management and teaching skills
- Effective communication and active listening abilities
- Ability to adapt instruction for students with varied learning levels
- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, or Associate degree with relevant teaching experience
- Experience teaching GED, HiSET, or adult education classes highly desirable
- Experience working with incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, or other justice-involved populations strongly preferred
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a correctional environment
- Reliable transportation for travel within Modesto, CA
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug screening and be approved for access to correctional facilities
- Bilingual Spanish skills are a plus, but not required
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with diverse populations
