Juvenile Detention Officer Lead - Juvenile Court (0326)

Nature of Work

Under supervision performs programming work of moderate difficulty in the Juvenile Detention facility; performs related work as assigned.

Typical Duties

  • Develops and implements programs in social and life skills, academic skills, crafts and physical exercise for youth;
  • Provides instruction for various programs;
  • Documents youth records and writes reports;
  • Works collaboratively with all court staff, parents and outside agencies;
  • Supervises employees assigned to residential Probation Officer/Detention (POD);
  • Ensures compliance with all programs in detention;
  • Ensures timely and accuracy within Juvenile On-Line Tracking System (JOLTS).

Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to: driving; standing and walking to supervise detainees; working with and around co-workers, juveniles and the public; dealing with interruptions; vision acuity near and far, hearing and speech for communicating with juveniles, staff and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field and two years working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR

Associate's degree in a related field and three years working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR

Four years working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

Additional Requirements

Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Must submit to background check prior to hire. Persons convicted of a felony are not eligible for hire within the Juvenile Detention facility. Forty hours of orientation training are required within first month on the job. Sixteen additional hours of COJET certified training are required each year. Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.

Preferred Qualificatons

Experience working with at-risk youth in a structured setting.

Experience or documented training in Trauma-Informed Care.

Experience or documented training in youth de-escalation techniques.

Experience creating and implementing youth-based programs.

Team-leading or supervisory experience.

This position is safety sensitive.

This position is non-exempt from overtime.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Considerable knowledge of:

  • Basic principles and methods of treatment for juvenile delinquency
  • Child and adolescent development theories and application
  • Effects of substance abuse and addiction
  • Dynamics of behavioral and emotional problems in children
  • Crisis intervention and basic first aid techniques including CPR
  • Detention policies and procedures and applicable state laws, rules and regulations
  • Principles, methods and techniques of group and individual counseling

Working Knowledge Of

  • Practices and procedures of a juvenile detention facility
  • Juvenile court proceedings
  • Human behavior and various social, economic and cultural backgrounds
  • Recordkeeping, documentation and report writing
  • Adolescent group activity planning and leadership

Ability To

  • Plan and schedule the work of others
  • Make appropriate decisions regarding methods of intervention and treatment
  • Deal impartially with individuals of various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds
  • Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public
  • Follow written and verbal instructions
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
