JOB DESCRIPTION


WORKING TITLE: Juvenile Probation Officer
DEPARTMENT: Juvenile Probation
REPORTS TO: Chief Juvenile Probation Officer


JOB SUMMARY: The Probation Officer performs moderately complex social service work. The Officer will
provide supervision to juveniles as directed by the Court. Work is performed under general supervision and
performance is based upon completion of assignments and results obtained. This position does come in
contact with youths that have severe behavioral and/or mental health deficiencies or needs, and all clientele
have the potential to be dangerous and aggressive.The performance evaluation is conducted by the Chief
Juvenile Probation Officer.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES


  • May supervise probationers in their home, school, place of employment or Detention.
  • Monitor the supervision and treatment provided to probationers by service providers and other juvenile
service agencies.
  • Monitor probationers adherence to court orders and take appropriate action when orders are violated.
  • Develop, review, and implement goals for probationers.
  • Prepare files for court by completing necessary reports and/or gathering records.
  • Attend to the emotional and physical needs of clients by initiating a partnership between probationers
and their families, while uniting them with appropriate resources.
  • Attend and participate in case staffing sessions as needed.
  • Document all information, contacts, and services pertaining to a probationer.
  • Responsible for computer data entry and updates.
  • Assist co-workers in the performance of their duties when necessary; especially as it pertains to security.
  • Assume responsibility for the transportation of probationers to medical appointments, dental appointments, court appearances, Detention, etc.
  • Maintain a safe and secure atmosphere.
  • Monitor group dynamics to prevent fighting and escape attempts.
  • Mediate disagreements between probationers.
  • Conduct searches as needed.
  • Restrain out-of-control youth.
  • Receive information about youth from law enforcement officers.
  • Be knowledgeable of the Texas Penal Code, Family Code and detention standards.
  • Make decisions regarding the detention of a referral or the release to parent(s) or placement in a
temporary shelter.
  • Provide crisis counseling to individuals calling after hours and refer them to the appropriate agency when necessary.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be a high school graduate or have completed a G.E.D.
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree conferred by a college or university, accredited by an accrediting
organization recognized by the Coordinating Board, Texas College and University System

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Commitment to the Department's vision of developing people to their full potential.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and techniques of social case work.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state laws, rules, regulations, procedures and techniques involved in
the preparation of the case records and related documents.
  • Understanding of human behavioral patterns and ability to apply good judgment to problem individuals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with fellow employees, the general
public and other social agencies.
  • Ability to assess the needs of the individual, client, and refer them to, and involve them in the
appropriate community agency or service.

  • Professional Customer Service skills; Basic math skills; Proper English usage, spelling, grammar and
punctuation.
  • Maintain a Driver's License in the State of Texas and a driving record that will allow insurance coverage
through the Department's provider, in addition to personal vehicle and liability insurance.
  • Handle exposure to potentially hostile individuals.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information encountered in work activities at all times.
  • Must have a telephone number at which he/she can be reached.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading

  • Maintain physical conditions needed to accomplish the performance of assigned duties and

Lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 50 pounds, such as files or stacks of records; occasional,
stooping, crawling, squatting, and/or kneeling.
  • Regular exposure to factors causing moderate physical discomfort from such things as dust, fumes,
odors or outdoor exposure.
  • Ability to physically restrain combative and/or resistant individuals using legally acceptable restraint
methods.
  • Maintain mental capacity sufficient to accomplish the performance of assigned duties and
responsibilities, which may include: Handling stressful situations; Interpreting federal laws and
regulations; Effective interactions and communication with others; Prepare clear and concise reports;
Making sound decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.
  • The ability to drive safely and within the laws and ordinances of the State of Texas and any subdivision
thereof, as well as, department policies.


SPECIAL CONDITIONS:


This position requires the passing of an extensive pre-employment background investigation. This position may
require specific training or experience that is relevant to the department and tasks required.
