Position: Librarian/Media & Literacy Teacher
Status: Certified
Reports to: School Principal
Salary: Certified Salary Schedule
Requirements:
● Alaska Teaching Certificate w/appropriate endorsements
Desirable Qualifications:
● Exceptional organizational skills
● Outstanding attention to detail
● Excellent communication, public relations and interpersonal relations skills
● Experience supervising youth consistent with the age group of the school
● Understanding of Alaska Native cultural background and the needs of Alaska Native students
● Experience or interest in literacy development, media literacy, and instructional technology
Performance Responsibilities:To facilitate, maintain, and enhance the Wrangell Public Schools libraries as the central hub for educational resources, information, literacy development, and instructional technology. The WPS libraries serve as dynamic learning spaces that foster curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, and a lifelong love of reading. The Librarian / Media and Literacy Teacher manages district collections, supports K–12 literacy, teaches media literacy and research skills, and leads forward looking initiatives that prepare students for academic and digital success in a rapidly evolving world.
General Responsibilities:
Responsibility to the District imposes the following obligations:

Essential Functions:
Programming and Library Leadership
● Maintain the Elementary and Secondary libraries as active learning centers
● Coordinate literacy programming such as Battle of the Books
● Assist with Scholastic & other Book Fairs and similar events
● Supervise and train student library aides
● Train and collaborate with paraprofessionals assigned to the library
● Teach at least two class periods daily
● Collaborate with the City Library and Alaska State Library
● Promote a reading culture and literacy growth
Collection and Resource Management
● Manage district print, digital, and multimedia collections
● Research, evaluate, and purchase books, software, and supplies
● Maintain district library database
● Catalogue and process new materials
● Evaluate, repair, weed, and update collections
● Actively seek out grant opportunities, write and submit grants following district procedures
● Organize professional resources for staff
Media Literacy, Research, and Instruction
● Plans daily instructional activities for students, demonstrating knowledge of subject matter and using the Alaska State Standards and the curriculum of the district
● Teach secondary courses, such as media literacy and research
● Support students in evaluating sources and academic integrity
● Integrate emerging technologies and responsible AI
● Potential to teach AP Seminar or AP Research
● Support project based learning and interdisciplinary units
Technology Responsibilities
● Maintain library technology and equipment
● Support computers and student workstations
● Manage projectors, cameras, and related tools
● Evaluate and recommend replacement of equipment
● Support staff and students in digital tools and databases
Collaboration and Schoolwide Engagement
● Partner with teachers on research projects
● Support curriculum development
● Provide staff training in digital citizenship and fair use
● Support family literacy events
● Promote WPSD’s mission through a strong library program
● Performs other duties as assigned.
