KPI Analyst
The KPI Specialist will be responsible for developing, implementing, and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor the performance of operational teams, with a focus on drilling, completion, production, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) metrics. This role will collaborate closely with upper management to identify key performance drivers and create actionable insights that help improve efficiency and optimize overall business performance. The role will focus on the usage of data analytics and data analysis tools including AI, Spotfire and Power BI to improve operational performance.
KPI Development and Management:
- Work with upper management and operational teams to identify, define, and prioritize key performance indicators (KPIs) for drilling, completion, production operations, well performance and ESG initiatives.
- Use AI/machine learning to recommend or auto-generate KPI frameworks based on historical performance patterns.
- Develop and implement tracking systems and dashboards to monitor real-time performance of key business activities.
- Ensure all KPIs align with business objectives and provide a clear understanding of operational performance.
- Track and report key operational KPIs related to drilling, completion, and production activities, such as well performance, drilling times, completion efficiencies, and production rates.
- Collaborate with operations teams to continuously evaluate performance data and identify areas for process optimization and efficiency improvements.
- Generate regular performance reports and analysis to provide insights into trends, anomalies, and opportunities for improvement.
- Utilize Enverus and other tools to monitor well performance of competitors within the basin and identify differentiators between SM operations and communicate to operational stakeholders.
- Lead Utah Analytics Task force and be the driving force behind prioritizing data needs and developing data solutions for Utah Operations and Asset Teams
- Use AI and other tools to analyze large datasets to extract meaningful insights and trends that can be used to inform decision-making and improve performance.
- Utilize skill in prompt engineering to extract high-quality, reliable outputs from AI tools.
- Develop and present visual reports, dashboards, and presentations for upper management, highlighting performance trends, root causes of underperformance, and recommendations for improvement.
- Ensure data accuracy, completeness, and integrity in all KPI reporting processes.
- Utilize knowledge of the asset to develop the operational performance story to be used in Executive, IR and Board of Director level communications.
- Develop and track critical ESG-related KPIs, including methane intensity, flaring volumes, and spill rates, to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements and sustainability goals.
- Collaborate with environmental and sustainability teams to collect, analyze, and report data that demonstrate Company commitment to reducing environmental impact.
- Partner with operational, environmental, investor relations and financial teams to ensure alignment on KPI objectives and performance expectations.
- Serve as a liaison between upper management and operational teams to ensure that KPI results are clearly communicated and that action plans are implemented when performance gaps are identified.
- Provide training and support to operational teams on how to use KPIs effectively to monitor performance and drive improvements.
- Ensure data cleanliness within WellView, ProdView and other operational systems to support various IOPS, business unit, and corporate processes
- Continuously assess and improve KPI tracking processes and systems to enhance data accuracy and reporting speed.
- Evaluate and pilot AI/machine learning tools to better and more quickly measure and report KPIs
- Stay up to date with industry best practices and emerging trends related to operational KPIs and ESG metrics.
- Identify and implement new tools or technologies to improve data collection and analysis capabilities.
- Automate and modernize existing predictive emissions forecasting using models trained on historical operational data
- Champion a test-and-learn culture around AI tool adoption within the analytics function
Preferred Skills
The KPI Specialist will play a crucial role in driving operational excellence and sustainability efforts by providing the necessary insights and metrics to help teams improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and achieve the company’s performance objectives.
- Experience in the oil & gas industry with a focus on operational and ESG metrics.
- Familiarity with regulatory reporting requirements for ESG metrics such as methane intensity, flaring, and spill rates.
- Knowledge of industry standards for sustainability and performance measurement.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Data Analytics, Operations Management, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in KPI development preferred in operational performance tracking, or data analysis, in the energy, oil & gas, or industrial sectors.
- Strong understanding of operational processes in drilling, completion, production, and ESG reporting.
- Proficiency with AI tools such as Claude, Microsoft Copilot, etc.
- Proficiency with data analytics and visualization tools such as Power BI, Denodo, Alteryx, Spotfire, Tableau, or Excel.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally.
- Strong attention to detail and a results-oriented mindset.
