FOR THE DIVISION OF SCIENCE
Position Description
LOCATION: Central, SC
CLASSIFICATION: Part-time; non-exempt; salaried; 25–27.5 hours/week
REPORTS TO: Chair of the Division of Science

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Lab & Safety Manager for the Division of Science provides essential support to faculty and students by ensuring safe, efficient, and well-organized laboratory operations. This position manages chemical, biological, and universal waste in compliance with regulatory standards; oversees and trains undergraduate lab assistants; prepares materials and supplies for teaching labs and courses; and coordinates purchasing and budget tracking for divisional needs. The Lab & Safety Manager works closely with faculty to support instructional and safety goals and must demonstrate excellent organizational skills, accuracy in handling budgets and inventories, and strong attention to detail.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Safety & Compliance
    • Manage chemical, biological, and universal waste in compliance with RCRA, DOT, SCDHEC, and biohazardous waste guidelines.
    • Inspect waste storage, eyewash stations, and safety equipment weekly.
    • Maintain waste inventories, complete disposal forms, and coordinate pickups with disposal service providers.
    • Organize and oversee regular cleaning of science labs according to safety best practices.
  • Laboratory Support & Training
    • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise undergraduate science lab assistants; review and approve time sheets.
    • Prepare solutions, equipment, and supplies for teaching labs in biology, chemistry, forensic science, physics, and related disciplines.
    • Maintain lab calendars and ensure smooth scheduling of lab usage.
    • Assist faculty with laboratory-related technology and information systems as needed.
  • Purchasing & Budget Tracking
    • Order laboratory and divisional supplies and equipment, ensuring cost-effective purchasing.
    • Track spending, monitor budgets, and prepare reports on current and historical budgetary needs and trends.
    • Process requisitions and invoices for supplies and services in a timely manner.
  • Collaboration & Communication
    • Work in close partnership with faculty to identify and meet laboratory and safety needs.
    • Communicate necessary repairs and maintenance issues to the Division Chair and appropriate university staff.
    • Maintain cordial, cooperative working relationships with other employees and respectful, supportive relationships with students.
  • Other Professional Expectations
    • Maintain confidentiality of student, staff, and institutional information.
    • Uphold a high standard of integrity, discretion, and professionalism in all duties.

About our ideal candidate

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of an Associate’s degree in science, laboratory technology, or a related field OR equivalent relevant experience.
  • RCRA, DOT, and Biohazardous Waste training preferred.
  • Experience in a teaching laboratory environment strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with lab safety practices, inventory management, and waste handling essential.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Competence with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and comfort with web-based systems.

Physical/Environmental Requirements:
  • Visual acuity necessary to manage inventories, files, and lab equipment.
  • Ability to sit in an office environment and stand for periods in labs/stockrooms.
  • Infrequent lifting of objects up to 30 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to adjust work hours occasionally for deliveries, waste pickups, or equipment servicing.
