Organization Summary: Mothers’ Milk Bank of Tennessee is a 501(c)3 nonprofit milk bank. We are an accredited member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA). Our mission is to provide safe pasteurized donor human milk to the most vulnerable babies. .

Position Summary: The Lab Technician plays a critical hands-on role in the safe handling, processing, and preparation of donor human milk for pasteurization and distribution. Working under the supervision of the Lab Supervisor, the Lab Technician ensures all procedures are conducted according to HMBANA guidelines, FDA regulations, and internal protocols. This role is essential to maintaining the safety, quality, and reliability of the milk supply provided to hospitals and infants in need.

In addition to laboratory responsibilities, this position provides backup support for courier operations and packing donor milk orders as needed. This role requires flexibility, including availability to work weekends.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Milk Handling & Processing

• Receive and process raw milk from donors.
• Thaw, pool, bottle, label, and prepare donor milk for pasteurization following strict standard operating procedures.
• Operate and monitor pasteurization equipment under the guidance of the Lab Supervisor.
• Prepare samples for microbiological testing and record results accurately.
• Analyze samples of milk for caloric content.

Sanitation & Safety

• Clean, sanitize, and maintain all lab equipment and work surfaces daily to ensure a sterile environment.
• Follow PPE protocols and aseptic techniques in all handling processes.
• Maintain compliance with HMBANA standards and relevant health and safety regulations.

Documentation & Compliance

• Accurately record milk batch data, donor lot numbers, processing times, and test results.
• Ensure all documentation meets HMBANA, FDA, and internal policy requirements.
• Assist in audits and quality control reviews as needed.

Inventory & Supplies

• Track and report inventory levels of lab materials, sanitizers, and PPE.
• Assist with stocking and organizing lab supplies to maintain an efficient workflow.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least 1 year of experience in a laboratory, healthcare, food safety, or sterile processing setting.
• Must be willing to work weekends.
• Strong attention to detail, critical thinking skills and commitment to cleanliness and precision.
• Basic computer literacy (data entry, spreadsheets, documentation systems).
• Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
• Must have a clean driving record to support courier and delivery responsibilities as needed.
• Candidates with an Associate’s degree in Biology or higher, or comparable laboratory experience in a related field will receive priority consideration.

Work Environment: Position involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions. Position requires regular standing, lifting (up to 30 lbs), and handling of frozen and refrigerated donor human milk. Lab environment with strict cleanliness and PPE requirements. Off-site meetings, events and travel are also a component of this position.
