Lab Technician/Operator-Wastewater Treatment Plant

NATURE OF WORK:

Responsible for semi-skilled, and skilled work relating to the operation, control and maintenance of the Ledyard Wastewater Treatment Plant.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Direct supervision from the Wastewater Operations Supervisor and/or his/her designee.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs a variety of duties in the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility and pumping station.
  • Perform all State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection required for “sterile and semi-sterile” laboratory testing for the wastewater treatment plant. The tests include but are not limited to BOD, total suspended solids, fecal/total coliforms, pH, ammonia, chlorine residual, temperature, alkalinity and sludge solids.
  • Inspect microbiological life regularly and notes any changes and reports said changes to the Supervisor.
  • Operates and maintains 24 hour composite samplers and all other pertinent laboratory equipment.
  • Schedules annual laboratory equipment calibrations.
  • Utilizes safety procedures.
  • Follows Standard Methods, NPDES Permit, and State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Laboratory Manual Testing Procedures.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Anticipates needs for parts, reagents and lab equipment.
  • Follows all chain of custody requirements.
  • Performs all other tasks pertinent to the operation and maintenance of the assigned wastewater plant, equipment and grounds.
  • Maintains State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection required certification for this position.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE

Knowledge, Skills & Ability

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experienced in all aspects of water/wastewater laboratory testing and procedures. Proficient in all the State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection testing requirements.
  • Familiarity with the EPA Quality Assurance Testing Program, as well as all NPDES requirements.
  • Ability to perform laboratory tests and interpret the results.
  • Must be able to obtain a State Certificate: Class 1 Wastewater Plant Operator Certificate within the first 18 months of employment.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions and to read and write English.

Additional Requirements

Occasional use of personal transportation and means of contact via a mobile phone with stipend from the Town according to collective bargaining agreement.

Physical and/or psychological examinations as may be required during employment.

Drug screening both pre-employment and as may be required during employment.

Criminal background and driving record checks are required prior to employment.

employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and may be required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Continuous visual acuity including close vision and the ability to adjust focus and normal audio ability.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in outside weather conditions as well as various inside environments. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts; in precarious places; and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, extreme cold, and extreme heat.

The employee must be free from mental and/or physical disorders which would interfere with performance of duties as described, and have the ability to maintain his/her composure with the public and co-workers in everyday, stressful and emergency situations. Employee may occasionally have to function in situations where subjected to aggressive physical and/or verbal behavior.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

  • Must have a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operators License.

Pay: $26.01 per hour
