Laboration Subject Matter Expert

J Michael Consulting is seeking multiple Laboratory Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to support JMC clients by leading requirements gathering activities across existing laboratory systems, including workflow analysis, needs assessment, and gap analysis. These roles partner closely with stakeholders to translate laboratory operations into system requirements and ensure effective alignment between business needs and technical solutions. Laboratory SMEs will also provide hands-on support for system configuration, including defining reference data, test setup, quality control parameters, workflow rules, and standardized vocabulary.

Successful candidates will be comfortable working across diverse data sources and technologies and will bring strong expertise in healthcare or public health environments with a deep understanding of laboratory testing systems, formats, and technical specifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Validation – Ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational standards, maintain accurate documentation, and support Quality Assurance processes.
  • Training – Deliver hands-on training, develop user manuals and SOPs, and support end-user readiness and knowledge transfer.
  • Integration – Support HL7 interfaces, laboratory instrument interfacing, and the determination and application of interoperability standards.
  • Reporting – Develop and support surveillance, aggregate, and management reporting to meet clinical, operational, and public health needs.

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a technical or scientific field such as Biology, Chemistry, Laboratory Sciences, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience is required.
  • 2–5 years of hands-on experience in clinical laboratory, public health laboratory, or laboratory informatics environments is preferred.
  • Experience in public health is required, with familiarity across federal, state, and/or local health systems.
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and/or public health surveillance systems.
  • Workflow Analysis: Demonstrated ability to understand laboratory workflows and document current-state processes using standardized tools and methodologies.
  • Needs Assessment – Experience gathering and validating client requirements, accurately capturing laboratory user needs using structured and standardized approaches.
  • Gap Analysis – Ability to identify and document gaps in existing systems and services through direct engagement with laboratory stakeholders.
  • System Configuration – Basic experience building and configuring laboratory modules within a Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • ValidationCompliance – Understanding of laboratory regulatory requirements with the ability to support validation activities using established tools and processes.
  • Training – Ability to train end users on system functionality and workflows to support effective adoption.
  • Integration – Foundational understanding of how laboratory systems communicate, including basic knowledge of interfaces and data exchange between systems.
  • Reporting – Awareness of how LIS data elements support clinical, operational, and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Ability to work with distributed teams and stakeholders across different time zones and maintaining responsiveness during core business hours.
  • Ability to interpret and validate laboratory data outputs and reports.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, project-based environments.
  • Experience working with structured data, spreadsheets, or reporting tools.
  • Strong attention to detail in data validation and quality checks.

Compensation: The salary range for this role is $60,000 - $100,000.

Final compensation will be determined based on skills and experience.
