Laboratory Animal Technician

Role Description The Laboratory Animal Technician is a full-time, on-site role based in San Diego, CA. This role supports research and development activities by carrying out and/or supporting husbandry-related animal procedures including feeding, watering and providing enrichment activities for animals housed in the facility. Running cage wash activities and keeping the facility clean and organized are key components of this role. The ideal candidate can demonstrate prior experience in a GLP-compliant environment. However, regulatory compliance training and support is available for strong candidates without direct prior experience. Day-to-day responsibilities include working with test systems, assisting with veterinary procedures, collecting and documenting data, and performing routine inspections and maintenance on devices and tools. The technician will troubleshoot basic equipment issues, coordinate with internal teams and vendors for service needs, and help ensure that all work areas, supplies, and instruments meet safety and quality standards. This position also involves supporting study logistics, organizing materials, and providing clear, professional communication to other team members and external partners.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of animal husbandry techniques.
  • Communicates animal health and welfare concerns according to site SOPs.
  • Set up and break down the facility spaces being used to perform animal housing.
  • Maintaining and auditing documentation of study-related procedures in a Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) compliant manner and according to site SOPs.
  • Receipt and transfer of research animals as needed.
  • Entering billing information to ensure proper charges are sent to study sponsors.
  • Breeding, strain maintenance, genotyping, long-term genetic monitoring, and applying identification systems for multiple colonies of rodents.
  • Inventory management and ordering supplies.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience in a relevant field; Associate's degree preferred.
  • Familiarity with laboratory or research environments, including basic documentation practices and compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures, manage multiple tasks, and work collaboratively in a fast-paced setting.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and basic proficiency with standard office and data-entry software.

Pay: $20.00 - $30.00 per hour
