Laboratory Assistant - I

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Anatomic Pathology Supervisor

Job Summary

Obtain and process pathology specimens (maintaining positive specimen identification), assist Histology Technician and maintain grossing stations to ensure the quality preparation of all specimens. Performs histology preparation, entry, and recording functions in accordance with department policies and procedures. Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise

Language Ability – Ability to read and interpret documents such as patient requisitions, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Math Ability – Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability – Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished either verbally or written. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Position Requirements (Education, Experience, Licensure/Certifications)

High School Diploma or equivalent 0 - 2 years experience in a histology laboratory is preferred.

Lab Assistant I:

Good clerical, organizational and communication skills. Basic knowledge of operating non-complex instrumentation.

Lab Assistant II:

Good clerical, organizational and communication skills. Basic knowledge of operating non-complex instrumentation.

Competent in addressing department pending lists and finding missing specimens.

Successful performance in the Lab Assistant I position.

Demonstrate the ability to follow a series of steps without confusion or error.

Must have the ability to establish work priorities and to handle several tasks for maximum workstation efficiency.

Must be able to retain information once learned.

Must interact with other coworkers, internal and external customers with courtesy and respect. Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities

1. Interacts with physicians, employees and clients in a positive manner consistent with the mission and values of Bako Diagnostics.

2. Ensure proper accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples.

3. Process paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.

4. Prepare reagents for tissue processing and routine slide staining, under direct supervision.

Job Type: Temporary

Pay: $19.00 - $22.00 per hour
