The Laboratory Donor Transfusion Supervisor is responsible for directing, coordinating, and overseeing all aspects of Blood Transfusion Services and Donor Collection Programs within a hospital laboratory setting. This role ensures high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency while managing staff and expanding donor services.
Develop, implement, and standardize policies and procedures for Blood Bank operations
Ensure delivery of safe, accurate, and timely transfusion services
Oversee compatibility testing including blood typing, antibody screening, identification, and crossmatching
Supervise preparation, storage, and distribution of blood products
Ensure compliance with quality control (QC), calibration, and regulatory standards
Monitor and ensure accurate reporting of test results
Oversee all operations of the Blood Donor Center and collection programs
Develop strategies to increase donor participation and collections
Coordinate internal databases, external drives, and mobile collection units
Reduce reliance on externally purchased blood products
Manage donor recruitment initiatives (autologous and homologous donations)
Plan, organize, and manage Blood Bank and Donor Center operations
Create and maintain staff schedules
Order and manage inventory of supplies and equipment
Oversee equipment maintenance and repairs
Monitor quality assurance and improvement programs
Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards
Manage budgets and submit variance reports
Maintain hands-on competency in donor and laboratory procedures
Perform phlebotomy for patients and donors
Conduct health screenings and collect donor histories
Prepare, label, and process blood components and samples
Perform serologic testing for diagnosis and treatment
Assist with troubleshooting and preventive maintenance of lab equipment
Train, orient, and evaluate staff performance
Serve as a technical resource for laboratory and hospital personnel
Conduct staff meetings and maintain documentation
Participate in hiring processes and staffing decisions
Foster teamwork and effective communication across departments
Develop and maintain Quality Control (QC), Quality Assurance (QA), and Quality Improvement programs
Ensure compliance with HIPAA and confidentiality standards
Maintain required records and reports for regulatory agencies
Promote a culture of safety, service excellence, and continuous improvement
Bachelor’s Degree (BS/BA) in Clinical Laboratory Science or related field
ASCP, NCA, or equivalent certification required
SBB certification preferred
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience, preferably in a blood center
Prior supervisory experience preferred
Strong leadership and organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities and solve complex problems
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements
Ability to work independently and build effective teams
Strong analytical and mathematical skills
Ability to travel to donor sites within the region
Proficiency in report writing, data analysis, and procedural documentation
Commitment to maintaining professional development and staying current with industry trends
