LABORATORY TECHNICAL ASSISTANT (PT)

POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: processes all patient test requests to include verifying the correct identity of all specimens, evaluating specimen quality, preparing specimens for testing if required and distributing to appropriate testing areas. Performs order entry for all test orders using the laboratory computer system, recognizing and resolving problems as they arise. Responds to hospital and computer “Down Time Notices” to ensure minimal service disruption. Identify and separate specimens to be referred to outside laboratories. Monitor the Computerized Tube System. Labels and accessions all patient
specimens accurately and maintains accurate records. Must be able to perform jobs in all patient care and operational areas subject to reasonable accommodations, also be able to employ all mandatory safety devices and procedures. Must participate in the Respiratory Protection Program, which may include the wearing of a respirator. Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment. This is a union position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:\


Performs All Pre-Analytical Responsibilities

 Confirms completeness of the test requisition and tests orders.
 Verifies specimens are labeled accurately and that minimal labeling requirements are met.
 Verifies specimen type and integrity, identifies, researches and corrects routine problems.
 Accessions specimens into the laboratory computer system, recording accurate collection time and specimen.
 Prepares specimens for analysis while maintaining correct and complete identification and using appropriate centrifuge methods to ensure specimen quality.
 Follows through and documents non-blood specimen collection, prepares collection material, measures specimens, records and forwards pertinent information necessary for the accurate calculation of the test results.
 Biological specimen collection, including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, inoculation, subculturing or staining and transportation and storage of specimens.
 Prepare specimens and paperwork for referral testing.
 Monitor and operate Computerized Tube System. Empty carriers promptly.


Performs All Analytical Responsibilities

 Delivers processed specimens to appropriate testing section and/or stores in appropriate location under specified conditions.
 Assist licensed personnel with all testing, leaving reading and interpretation up to the licensed personnel.
 Assist in preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory analytical equipment and ancillary biomedical equipment.
 Preparation and storage of reagents and culture media.
 Assisting in the performance of quality control, inventory, and linearity procedures.


Performs All Post-Analytical Responsibilities

 Accurate completion and recording of test orders/requests and accurate transcription of test results previously recorded by licensed personnel or automatically by testing instrument.
 Assisting and performance of other clerical functions necessary to the operation of the laboratory.
 Monitor incoming phone inquiries and requests for fax’s and/or results.
 Route incoming mail and prepare outgoing materials/specimens for mailing.
 Assist with typing, filing, copying and collating as assigned.
 Maintains all reports and records to ensure rapid retrieval/dissemination of vital patient information.
 Bills for charges incurred for examination and/or testing.


Performs All Department Responsibilities

 Assist in laboratory housekeeping, disinfection and waste segregation processes.
 Collects and cleans glassware.
 Receive, label, and store supplies. Verify shipping documents against orders. Inventory supplies and report any supplies needed to supervisor.
 Takes an active role in providing training and assists new personnel in department orientation. Acts as a resource for new personnel.
 Assists CLS Supervisor in the coordination and training of CLS and MLT students.
 Demonstrates and supports the integrated automated Core Laboratory operations and its mission to provide patient test information accurately and efficiently to the caregivers of the hospital, which impacts value base purchasing.
 Demonstrates and supports working with the hospital and the Core Laboratory in raising efficiency, productivity, and reducing operating cost and waste.

FTE: 0.5, mid-shift 09:00 - 17:30, DAYS - 8HRS

Education: A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent discipline.

Experience: One year of lab operation and knowledge of sterile techniques.

Licenses/Certificates: Current phlebotomy certification preferred.
