Laboratory Technician

The Laboratory Technician provides care and feeding to laboratory animals, cleaning and changing cages, in a safe, sanitary and humane manner. This position requires excellent time management and organizational skills. Must be comfortable working with animals.

This is a great opportunity for a high school or college student.

Part-time job, 12-14 hours/week.

Job Duties:

Perform daily, weekly and monthly animal husbandry tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Daily check of adequate feed and water levels in all cages.
  • Daily check for sick, injured or animal(s) and mark the cage & notify the PI.
  • Daily check for wet bedding and leaking water bottle.
  • Bi-weekly change of cages.
  • Clean and sweep animal room floors, walls, air vents, and cage racks.
  • Record keeping (daily and monthly census).
  • Maintain inventory for animal related supplies (Feed, Bedding, Wood blocks, Coiled paper, Cage card and other supplies), sentinel test.
  • Clean and wash cages bi-weekly.
  • Set and check (daily) vermin traps.
  • Keep animal facilities clean & organized.
  • File monthly and annual census report
  • Assist with completing the OLAW and AAALAC annual report filing.
  • Prepare sterile mouse cages with feed and sterile water bottles for the immunocompromised mouse strains.
  • Certification of vaporizer and isoflurane inventory.
  • Maintain regular communication (monthly) with the attending veterinarian and when needed.

General Lab support

  • Daily check liquid nitrogen levels of Labs 40.
  • Weekly check and filling of liquid nitrogen Dewars.
  • Check CO2 tank levels weekly.
  • Help maintain and clean the lab as needed.
  • Stock and maintain inventory
  • Fill and Sterilize pipet boxes (200 ml tips and 1000 mltips).
  • Prepare and Autoclave glass bottles
  • Fill and bake Pasteur pipettes
  • PBS and PBST preparations.
  • Water line filter changes.
  • Eye wash station daily check

· Other duties as assigned by the manager.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of husbandry practices as routinely required in a laboratory animal environment is a plus.
  • Ability to operate standard lab animal equipment including scales, autoclaves, cage changing hoods, cage washers.
  • Ability to lift bag feed, cages, animal bedding and other items in the lab.
  • Ability to work in personal protection equipment.
  • Solid written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to take initiative to complete work tasks and provide updates to the manager.
  • Take relevant CITI class certifications.

Experience & Education:

  • High school diploma is a plus.
  • Experience working in an animal laboratory is preferred, but not required.
  • This is a great opportunity to high school students or college students.
