POSITION SUMMARY
The Laboratory Technologist is required to perform with or without supervision the sample preparation, quantitation, testing, and resulting of molecular testing on clinical lab specimens. Interacts extensively with other technologists/analysts, Medical Director, Clinical PhD, administrative staff, marketing, office staff, vendors, and physician offices, either in person or via telephone. Is able to prioritize workload accordingly and is able to quantitate all methods used in the laboratory.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Personnel performing high complexity testing must have a minimum of one of the following:
- Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; or
- Associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489 (see NOTE 2); or
- In addition, all testing personnel must be licensed to perform laboratory testing in the state of Georgia
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
- Able to perform all testing according to Standard Operating Procedure's applicable to position.
- Familiar with terminology and ranges of the internal standards, calibrations, cutoff ranges, quality control, lower level of detection, upper level of detection and the role they play in determining the patient results.
- Knowledgeable of appropriate use and disposal of chemicals used in the preparation of testing.
- Demonstrates accurate and precise pipetting techniques.
- Demonstrates proficiency in recognizing potential chemical hazards.
- Enters all results in LIMS correctly and is able to review results entered by other analysts.
- Reports results appropriately and within the required time frame.
- Demonstrates understanding of specimen and requisition requirements.
- Familiar with test menu.
- Understands and demonstrates proper labeling requirements.
- Understands procedures concerning problem resolution.
- Follows procedure when resolving all pending logs.
- Able to perform all procedures applicable to position according to procedure.
- Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting maintaining records of patient results
- Maintain records which demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies and documenting all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance.
- Follow the laboratory's policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
- Able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either corrects the problem or notify the appropriate supervisor.
- Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and for reporting test results, and should only perform those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and that are within the individual's skill level as determined by education, training or experience, and technical abilities.
Testing personnel must:
- Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.
- Maintain records which demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies and documenting all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance.
- Follow the laboratory's policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
- Be able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or notify the appropriate supervisor.
