Lateral Firefighter EMT or Paramedic

STARTING SALARY: Lateral EMT: $54,716.00 /Lateral Paramedic: $65,761.00

The Annapolis Fire Department is seeking dedicated, high-caliber professionals for the dual-role position of Firefighter / EMT or Firefighter / Paramedic. This is a critical public safety role responsible for protecting and safeguarding the lives and property of the Annapolis community through a combination of emergency medical services, fire suppression, and technical rescue.

Operating as a member of a close-knit team, the incumbent must maintain a calm, professional demeanor while managing high-stakes crises and unpredictable, rapidly changing circumstances. Whether combating structure fires or providing advanced life support, our Firefighters embody the department's commitment to excellence, resilience, and unwavering service.

Essential Job Functions

Emergency Operations & Medical Care

  • Fire Suppression: Combats and extinguishes fires at various scenes by laying hoses, directing water streams, and raising/climbing ladders.
  • Emergency Medical Services (EMT): Performs Basic Life Support (BLS) functions, including patient assessments, CPR, splinting, and administration of Maryland-approved BLS medications.
  • Emergency Medical Services (Paramedic): Performs Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), including endotracheal intubation, administration of drugs/IV fluids, and cardiac monitoring per state protocols.
  • Crisis Management: Assumes medical responsibility at emergency scenes, implements triage procedures, and establishes treatment priorities.

Technical Stewardship & Community Safety

  • Operational Readiness: Inspects emergency vehicles and equipment at the start of each shift to ensure cleanliness, proper inventory, and immediate operational status.
  • Apparatus Maintenance: Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and apparatus in the field and at assigned fire stations.
  • Fire Prevention: Conducts periodic safety inspections and fire hazard surveys of residential and commercial properties; performs public relations and education activities.
  • Documentation: Maintains detailed records of all patient care provided and vehicle operations during assigned shifts.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Emotional Intelligence: Proven ability to regulate stress and maintain focus in chaotic or unpredictable environments.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in modern firefighting methods and the operation of emergency vehicles, pumps, aerial devices, and salvage equipment.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to perform equipment maintenance and minor repairs under adverse conditions.
  • Collaborative Spirit: Willingness to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a close-knit team environment.
  • Certification and License: Ability to obtain and maintain NREMT-P certification and Maryland EMT-P license based on the needs of the department

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED.
  • Age & Licensure: Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Certification: Current NREMT/NREMTP certification and/or Maryland EMT certification/Paramedic license.
  • Recruit Training: Successful completion of a structured career fire academy recruit training program (minimum 12 weeks).
  • Experience: Demonstrated experience within the last three (3) years serving as a BLS or ALS provider in a career fire department.
  • Firefighter Certification: Certification as Firefighter II (FFII) through IFSAC and/or Pro Board.

Employment Conditions

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • Strength & Agility: Frequently required to stand, walk, and reach; must frequently lift 20 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 150 pounds.
  • Sensory Acuity: Requires close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Schedule: Requires adherence to shift schedules including 24-hour rotations, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Work Environment:

  • Exposure: Regularly works in outside weather conditions and occasionally near moving mechanical parts, toxic gasses, explosive mixtures, or radioactive materials.
  • Acoustics: Noise levels are usually moderate but can be loud during emergency responses.
