Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and experienced layout/fitter to join our team. As a layout/fitter, you will be responsible for performing a variety of duties including laying out, designing, fabricating, and assembling. You will work with hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments to ensure the highest quality of work.
Duties:
Plan and develop layouts from drawings and templates, applying knowledge of trigonometry, design, effects of heat, and properties of metals.
Brace parts in position for welding.
· Assemble metal structures.
Lay out and fabricate metal structural parts such as plates, bulkheads, and frames.
· Assemble metal parts or products.
· Lay out parts to prepare for assembly.
Mark curves, lines, holes, dimensions, and welding symbols onto workpieces, using scribes, soapstones, punches, and hand drills.
· Draw guide lines or markings on materials or workpieces using patterns or other references.
· Calculate dimensions of workpieces, products, or equipment.
· Draw guide lines or markings on materials or workpieces using patterns or other references.
· Align parts or workpieces to ensure proper assembly.
· Lift materials or workpieces using cranes or other lifting equipment.
· Plan production or operational procedures or sequences.
· Construct patterns, templates, or other work aids.
Specific tasks for bridge fabrication:
· Fit main member butt splices – webs and flanges – read drawings; set camber; understand joint geometry
· Fit web to flange at the girder machine; operate the machine and overhead cranes
· Fit stiffeners to webs/top flanges
· Set elevation and camber for bottom flanges
· Fit sides to bottom flange
· Fit internal crossframes and struts
· Fit up internal diaphrams – stiffeners, manholes, edge bevels, mill-to-bear
· Fit up access doors, hinges, latches, screening
· Fit up beveled bearing plates
· Square up sides for tub girder
· Fit up lateral bracing at top flanges
· Fit up bearing diaphragms – mill to bear, lean, tolerances
· Fit up external diaphragms
· Fit up external crossframes
· Torches – understand pre-heat levels, burning various plate thicknesses
· bevel machines – interpret drawings; set bevels; burn to dimensions
· jacks – understand loads, capacities, pick points
· overhead cranes – calculate loads; read drawings; safety factors; rigging capacities
Requirements:
- Proven experience in welding, machining, fabrication, and assembly
- Proficient in the use of hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work with precision
- Ability to lift heavy objects and stand for extended periods of time
