The Lead Mechanic is responsible for overseeing daily maintenance and repair operations for a fleet of commercial trucks and trailers while serving as a technical leader and mentor to junior mechanics. This role combines hands-on mechanical expertise with leadership, training, and coaching responsibilities to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient fleet operations. The Lead Mechanic sets work standards, supports skills development, and promotes a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement within the maintenance team, working closely with the Service Manager to ensure goals are aligned.

Mechanical & Technical Responsibilities:
· Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines, powertrains, braking systems, steering, suspension, electrical systems, and HVAC on Class 7–8 trucks and trailers
· Perform complex troubleshooting and advanced repairs that exceed entry- or mid-level mechanic capabilities
· Ensure all repairs meet DOT, FMCSA, OEM, and company safety standards
· Conduct preventive maintenance inspections (PMs) and ensure accurate documentation
· Review repair work for quality, completeness, and safety compliance
· Support after-hours or emergency repairs as needed
Leadership, Training & Coaching:
· Act as technical lead for the shop, providing guidance and direction to mechanics
· Assign or assist in prioritizing daily work orders to minimize downtime
· Serve as point of escalation for difficult diagnostics or repeat failures
· Coordinate with Service Manager on staffing needs, parts usage, and equipment issues
· Promote safe work practices and ensure shop rules and procedures are followed
· Train and onboard new mechanics, evaluating their skillsets and training needs
· Coach junior mechanics on diagnostics, repairs, tool usage and documentation standards
· Conduct group training and collaborate with Training Program Specialist to create new training topics
· Foster a positive learning environment focused on growth, safety and accountability
· May assist in developing standard operating procedures (SOP’s) and Job aids
· Participate in continuous improvement initiatives
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
· Knowledge of state and federal regulations
· Strong management skills in leading, planning, organizing, delegating, problem resolution, and operational controls
· Communicate clearly and effectively in English with others verbally and in writing
· Coach or train employees on safety policies and procedures
· Demonstrate highly effective interpersonal skills when working with others and display honesty, loyalty, and integrity in all aspects of the job
· Intermediate skill when working with common software programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc
· Demonstrate above average skills operating a wide variety of common service garage equipment
· Have a thorough understanding of all equipment operation maintenance needs
· Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations
· Be punctual, dependable and trustworthy and pay attention to minute details
· Quickly and accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
· Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Required:
· 5-8+ years of prior related work experience in the shop supervisory and/or management area.
· 23 years or older — FMCSR Part 391.11 (b) (1)
· Experience or demonstrated ability to mentor or train other mechanics
· Read and speak English sufficiently to converse with general public and comprehend DOT and OSHA regulations — FMCSR Part 391.11 (b) (2)
· No serious moving violation (excessive speeding over 15 mph) or DUI in the previous 5 years
· Must have complete set of mechanic’s tools
· Must pass substance abuse screening (as a safety sensitive employee subject to random substance abuse screening under company policy)
· Ability to pass a fit for duty test to meet minimum physical demands of the job
Certificates, Licenses, Registration
· Valid Alaska Class A CDL with TX endorsement (or ability to obtain)
· Valid medical card — FMCSR Part 391.11 (b) (4)
Preferred:
· Preference given to those with a four-year degree, ASE, and or CFM Certification

Pay: $34.00 - $40.00 per hour
