ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Office of the Clerk of the Illinois Supreme Court files cases and maintains records for the Illinois Supreme Court. The Clerk of the Court seeks a highly motivated and responsible individual to perform specialized clerical and administrative work to process cases filed with the Supreme Court. Under the supervision of the Clerk and the Chief Deputy Clerk, the Lead Deputy Clerk is responsible for a wide variety of complex legal clerical duties.

FUNCTIONS INCLUDE

  • Assisting attorneys and the general public with inquiries regarding filings with the Supreme Court.
  • Reviewing and processing filings in compliance with Supreme Court Rules and practices.
  • Preparing correspondence and notices to case parties and other government agencies.
  • Processing memoranda and Supreme Court orders.
  • Preparing various Supreme Court reports and announcements.
  • Managing and maintaining confidential information.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Individual must be dedicated, detail-oriented, and possess excellent communication skills. Applicants should possess the ability to work independently and exercise discretion in carrying out assigned duties. Applicants should be able to read and comprehend legal documents; interact diplomatically with a diverse group of people; empathize with court users; adjust to unexpected events while meeting deadlines; and provide procedural information without giving legal advice. Applicants should have experience with editing and proofreading as well as handling interruptions and working independently. Must possess excellent written/verbal communication, comprehension and organizational skills, and be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.

A minimum of three years of work experience in an office environment, preferably a legal setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. An associate’s degree in a related field is preferred.
