Lead Gardener

Job Description

University Townhouses Cooperative is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Gardener to oversee and maintain the extensive landscaping and horticultural needs of our large, community-focused property in Ann Arbor. This is a full-time position ideal for a passionate professional with advanced knowledge of plant care, landscape design, and sustainable gardening practices.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, plan, and maintain gardens, green spaces, and landscaped areas across the cooperative community
• Supervise and participate in planting, pruning, fertilizing, watering, and pest management
• Develop seasonal planting strategies and long-term landscape improvement plans
• Manage soil health, composting systems, and environmentally sustainable practices
• Oversee irrigation systems and ensure efficient water usage
• Coordinate with community members and leadership on garden initiatives and improvements
• Train and supervise gardening staff and volunteers
• Maintain tools, equipment, and garden infrastructure

Qualifications

• Minimum 4+ years of professional gardening or horticulture experience
• Strong knowledge of native plants, perennials, and sustainable landscaping practices
• Experience in landscape design and project management
• Ability to lead a team and work collaboratively in a community environment
• Familiarity with organic gardening methods and ecological stewardship
• Physical ability to perform outdoor labor in varying weather conditions
• Certification in horticulture, landscaping, or a related field preferred
